Join our Risk AI/ML team as a Machine Learning Engineer. This role is vital in creating sophisticated models that protect our customers and solidify Coinbase as the leading trusted platform in crypto. Your work will be essential in preventing fraud, account takeovers, and scams, enabling features like instant guest checkout and Coinbase Cards. Your Responsibilities: Model Development: Own the entire development cycle of machine learning models, from concept to deployment, using our centralized self-service platform. Core Model Enhancement: Collaborate closely with a dedicated team to refine our key models, including Scam Models, Transaction Risk Models, Withdrawal Limit Models, and Account Takeover Models. Threat Response: Rapidly respond to new threat intelligence to create, train, and deploy durable ML models, achieving deployment timelines of under one week. Scalable Model Deployment: Develop high-performance, production-grade AI/ML models and pipelines that facilitate real-time predictions using automated CI/CD processes. Advanced Machine Learning Applications: Apply contemporary techniques like deep learning, NLP, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), sequence modeling, and LLMs to tackle intricate challenges in the crypto space. Context-Aware Risk Systems: Help build customizable logic that tailors user experiences based on individual risk profiles while ensuring security. Collaboration and Execution: Partner with Risk Operations, Platform Engineering, and Product Management teams to turn emerging threats into automated defenses. What We Value in You: 2+ years of experience in software engineering and/or AI/ML, particularly in deploying AI/ML systems in production environments. A strong commitment to building an open financial system and a genuine desire to protect users from fraud and scams, embodying our core values: positive energy, clear communication, curiosity, and a builder mindset. Familiarity with practical AI/ML methodologies such as Risk ML, deep learning, NLP, recommender systems, and anomaly detection. Proficient in programming languages like Python, with experience in AI/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), and backend development with a focus on data processing or analytics is a plus. Strong capacity for collaborative engagement in technical initiatives and contributing to impactful AI/ML solutions. Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining technical concepts to diverse audiences. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, or a related field. Familiarity with modern AI/ML and data infrastructures such as Feature Stores, Model Serving, Apache Airflow, Spark, and Kafka. Experience with Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) or Sequential Models (like LSTMs). Knowledge of LLMs (NLP, fine-tuning, agentic systems) or Reinforcement Learning. Understanding of MLOps best practices for monitoring and iterating production models. Experience in data analysis and visualization tools.
