Salary: $18.76 - $19.90 Hourly Location : Colton, CA Job Type: Seasonal Part Time Job Number: 25/26-00046 Department: Community Services Opening Date: 02/09/2026 Closing Date: 3/1/2026 11:59 PM Pacific Definition The City of Colton Community Services Department is looking for enthusiastic, team players who will be responsible for the safety and care of community members who visit the pool. This will include teaching swim lessons, lifeguarding during recreation and swimming pool parties, and providing a safe environment for aquatic fitness opportunities. Mark your calendar for Saturday March 14, 2026 and Sunday April 12, 2026 from 8:00 am to 1:00 to prepare to go through an Aquatics Assessment with the Community Services Team. These are the only dates and times the assessment will take place. Candidates will receive an email if they are invited to continue in the process of attending the Aquatics Assessment. DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, this position is responsible for lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons at a community swimming pool. Typically, does not exercise supervision over staff or volunteers. Responsible for the safety and care of the community members who visit the pool. This can include teaching swim lessons, lifeguarding during pool parties, and providing a safe environment for aquatic fitness opportunities. Essential FunctionsEXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Enforces all pool and facility rules. Prevents injuries and minimizes hazardous situations. Provides patron surveillance whenever a patron is in the water. Responds to all injuries, accidents and emergency situations as they arise. Arrives to work on time as scheduled for shifts and in-service training. Instructs various ages in swimming, water safety, and other aquatic programming. Completes assigned cleaning duties. Completes other duties as assigned. Maintain prompt and regular attendance. Perform related duties as required. QualificationsTRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this knowledge and abilities would be: Education: Enrolled in and attending High School or General Education Equivalent for candidates under 18 years of age. A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required for candidates 18 years of age and older. and Experience: A minimum of three (3) months of experience in customer service, recreational activities, volunteer experience or closely related area. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be 16 years of age or older (Minimum legal requirements for working minors including a work permit). Possession of a valid California Identification card, or School I.D. card. Possession of a valid "C" California Driver's license is desired. Possession of, or ability to obtain at time of appointment, and maintain the following American Red Cross certifications: Lifeguarding/First Aid CPR/AED for Lifeguards. Additional InformationKnowledge of: Aquatic programming for various age groups; record keeping and statistical computations; basic customer service principles and techniques. Ability to: Communicate in a clear, concise, and effective manner with patrons of all ages and backgrounds; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates and the public; follow written and oral instructions; appear for work on time and in presentable uniform; be a source of accurate information; facilitate aquatic activities for participants of all ages and abilities; positively represent the City of Colton in demeanor and work ethic; perform light pool maintenance and follow written and oral instructions. Skill to: Maintain American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards. PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: The majority of work is performed outdoors in a swimming pool. An incumbent sits, stands, walks and runs on slippery and uneven surfaces, kneels, crouches, twists, swims, reaches, bends, crawls, and pushes, pulls, drags, grasps carry, and lifts equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, an incumbent physically must be able to react quickly to lifesaving emergencies and will perform strenuous physical activity requiring physical strength and endurance when performing water rescues. During the course of some rescue and first aid tasks, an incumbent may be exposed to blood, other bodily fluids/products, communicable diseases and other related health hazards. An incumbent will have exposure to pool water and pool chemicals, cleaning solvents and disinfectants and electrical and mechanical hazards. An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed. Working Conditions: Exposed to extreme heat, and various weather conditions. Work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Moderate to high noise levels. All candidates will go through a background including a pre-employment physical (under 18 years of age will need parent/guardian participation). Temporary/Part-Time Appointments: Temporary/Part-time appointments do not qualify for City benefits, except for those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 8% of base earnings. There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.
