Overview Join an innovative research team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and help tackle significant energy and environmental challenges. Within our Energy and Environment Directorate, you'll play a crucial role in modernizing the power grid and promoting renewable energy technologies for a sustainable energy future. This internship presents a unique chance to collaborate with experts in the Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division. You'll explore vital research areas including energy efficiency, electric grid modernization, and the integration of renewable energy, storage solutions, and electric vehicles into the power grid. Responsibilities We are excited to welcome enthusiastic PhD students looking to gain valuable hands-on research experience. Our 10-week paid summer internship, part of the Energy and Environment Internship Program (EEIP), will commence on May 26, 2026 or June 19, 2026. You will be paired with a mentor and assigned to a focused project group in one of the following areas: Power Systems Engineering: Engage in grid architecture, communications, modeling, simulation, and security. Energy System Analytics and Control: Participate in analytics, control theory, optimization, and advanced computing. Building System Sciences & Engineering: Work on building energy modeling, electrical systems design, and optimization techniques. Policy, Markets and Deployment: Contribute to market design, economic analysis, and planning for energy transitions. This internship will enrich your research experience, foster professional development opportunities, and enable you to network with distinguished scientists and engineers at PNNL.
