Position Overview: Join our dynamic team as a Fiber Optic Network Technician, focused on cutting-edge long-haul fiber optic cable testing. This rewarding role involves installation, maintenance, and thorough testing of fiber networks essential for high-speed data transmission over extensive distances. Key Responsibilities: Installation and Splicing: Perform the installation, termination, labeling, and routing of fiber optic and copper cabling systems in diverse settings, including underground, aerial, and data centers. Execute precise fusion and mechanical splicing to ensure optimal connections. Testing and Troubleshooting: Utilize specialized equipment such as Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs), power meters, light sources, and visual fault locators to conduct comprehensive end-to-end testing, verify network performance, assess signal strength, and diagnose any faults. Maintenance and Repair: Conduct routine maintenance and respond to emergency service calls, identifying root causes of issues, repairing damaged cables, and replacing faulty equipment to restore service swiftly. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of installations, test outcomes, repairs, and material usage using digital mapping tools or software. Safety and Compliance: Follow all safety protocols (e.g., OSHA guidelines) and industry standards (e.g., TIA/EIA) while working with lasers and electrical equipment in various field environments. Collaboration: Work effectively with engineers, project managers, and team members to ensure seamless project execution and completion. Qualifications and Skills: Experience: 2-4 years of hands-on field experience in fiber optics or telecommunications, especially in long-haul projects. Ability to read technical drawings and schematics is crucial. Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using test equipment to diagnose and resolve complex issues in the field, including: Fiber Inspection and Cleaning OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) Power Meter Fiber QuickMap OLTS (Optical Loss Test Set) ORL (Optical Return Loss) Gig-E Testing Visual Fault Locator (VFL) Physical and Environmental Demands: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in confined or elevated spaces. A willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel frequently (up to 80-90%) is required. Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, excellent communication skills, adaptability to various environments, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. Certifications: While not mandatory, certifications such as the Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or specialized certifications in splicing and testing are highly desirable. Licensing: A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
