Job Description

Position Summary The Temporary Building Float supports the smooth functioning of the school day by providing flexible, responsive staffing across all program levels (Toddler through Junior High). This individual steps into a variety of environments to ensure uninterrupted coverage during short and long term staff absences, meetings, lunch breaks, transitions, and other emergent needs. The Building Float collaborates with Guides and assistants, adapts to diverse classroom environments, and helps uphold schoolwide consistency in student experience, safety, and daily rhythm. The Building Float is a reliable, observant, and relationship-centered professional who contributes to the strength of the whole school by offering stability, responsiveness, and care wherever needed. Position hours are Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm until June 12, 2026. Education & Experience Education High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework or experience in education preferred. Experience Experience working with children or adolescents in a school, camp, or childcare setting. Interest in Montessori philosophy; prior exposure to Montessori environments is a plus. Competencies & Certifications Ability to build rapport quickly with children and adapt to different developmental levels. Flexibility, reliability, and capacity to shift tasks and settings throughout the day. Observant, calm, and respectful presence in varied classroom environments. Strong communication skills and ability to follow verbal and written directions from multiple team members. Commitment to equity, inclusion, and the dignity of each child. Comfort with both indoor and outdoor supervision in all seasons. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Classroom Support & Child Engagement Provide support across all levels (Toddler, Primary, Elementary, and Junior High). Offer continuity of care by integrating into classroom routines and responding to children's needs in developmentally appropriate ways. Observe and maintain classroom expectations and norms as established by Guides, supporting consistency and student independence. Engage with students respectfully and appropriately in alignment with Montessori principles and the tone of each learning community. Coverage & Operational Support Provide scheduled lunch break coverage across multiple classrooms each day. Serve as on-call coverage for short or long term staff absences, transitions, and additional classroom needs. Offer assistance during high-transition periods such as arrival, dismissal, and outdoor transitions. Staff extended day programming. Communicate regularly with the Office Administrator to receive and respond to daily coverage assignments. Prepared Environment Help maintain clean, orderly, and safe environments indoors and outdoors, including assisting with resetting materials or basic cleaning when needed. Alert classroom staff or facilities personnel to any concerns about environment, materials, or student safety. Schoolwide Consistency & Collaboration Build and maintain professional relationships with children, adolescents, and colleagues across all levels. Maintain confidentiality, discretion, and a calm demeanor in all settings. Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism when moving between levels and team dynamics. Support consistency in shared spaces such as hallways, coatrooms, and common areas. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds (e.g., assisting toddlers, setting up classroom materials). Ability to move easily among child-sized furniture and seating. Physical stamina to supervise and engage with children throughout a full school day. Comfort working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Work Environment The workday includes both scheduled coverage, such as lunch breaks, and unscheduled or last-minute assignments, requiring flexibility and responsiveness to daily needs. Frequent movement between classrooms, hallways, outdoor spaces, and common areas is expected throughout the day. The position involves working in both calm and fast-paced environments, with responsibilities occurring indoors and outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions. Daily engagement with children, educators, and administrators is central to the role, which takes place in a highly collaborative and child-centered school culture.
