Job Description

The Red Cross plays a vital role in responding to over 60,000 emergencies every year, primarily addressing local, personal disasters such as home fires. Our Disaster Action Teams (DAT) deliver essential emotional support, financial assistance, and recovery information to families in need. As a Disaster Response Officer, you will be crucial in activating and managing DAT responses efficiently and effectively. Key Responsibilities: Evaluate incoming requests to determine the necessity for Red Cross intervention through the DAT. Utilize event characteristics like size and scope to dictate and amplify the DAT response as needed. Collaborate with on-site DAT leadership to provide support and technical guidance during responses. Support and mentor new Disaster Response Officers. Communicate critical information to leadership and other stakeholders. Prepare Initial Incident Reports (IIR) as required by regional protocols. Ensure adherence to DAT Standards and Procedures during all responses. Cultivate strong relationships with DAT Program Leads and coordinators to facilitate effective scheduling and support for responders. Operational Duties: Document incoming disaster notifications and manage them using the RC Respond system. Oversee all DAT operations and activities via RC Respond. Identify available DAT responders and dispatch them accordingly to fulfill client requirements. Activate specialized services such as Disaster Health, Mental Health, Spiritual Care, and Public Affairs as needed. Maintain consistent communication with all assigned responders and update their status in the RC Respond system. Monitor multiple DAT responses as necessary, providing assistance across all active calls. Notify regional staff of significant events and contribute to Initial Incident Reports when warranted. Manage your availability by signing up for shifts in RC Respond. Participate in regularly scheduled DAT meetings as mandated by your chapter or region. Maintain user access to the RC Respond Duty Officer system. Qualifications: Reliable access to a computer, internet, and a phone. Comfortable with technology and eager to learn new systems. Commitment to utilizing the RC Care and RC Respond systems as necessary. Able to prioritize multiple tasks in complex, rapidly changing, and high-pressure environments. Must be at least 18 years of age. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to work for extended periods on a computer. Clear verbal communication skills on the phone. Willingness to adhere to current public health guidelines and Red Cross policies. Shifts required: 4-6 shifts per month, totaling approximately 20 hours monthly, with urgent needs for shifts from 2PM-6PM and 10PM-6AM. Available Shifts: 6AM-10AM 10AM-2PM 2PM-6PM - Urgent need 6PM-10PM 10PM-6AM - Urgent need
