Position Title: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) - Mental Health Technician Department: Behavioral Health / Crisis Services Reports To: Program Supervisor or Nurse Manager FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time Location: Colorado Springs, CO (and surrounding service areas as assigned) Position Summary The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) - Mental Health Technician (MHT) plays a vital role in supporting individuals experiencing acute behavioral health crises within Diversus Health Crisis Services, including Acute Treatment Units (ATU) and other crisis-based programs. This position provides direct patient care, behavioral health support, crisis intervention, and milieu management under the supervision of licensed clinical and nursing staff. The CNA-MHT supports Diversus Health's mission by promoting safety, dignity, recovery, and therapeutic engagement while ensuring compliance with regulatory, clinical, and organizational standards in high-acuity, fast-paced crisis environments. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDirect Patient Care & Support Provide direct care and supervision to individuals with mental health and/or substance use needs in a behavioral health setting. Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene, mobility, meals, and comfort measures as appropriate. Monitor patient behavior, mental status, and physical condition; promptly report changes or concerns to nursing or clinical staff. Perform basic nursing tasks within CNA scope of practice, including obtaining and documenting vital signs, intake/output, and observation checks. Behavioral Health, Crisis & Milieu Support Actively support individuals experiencing psychiatric crises, emotional distress, and behavioral dysregulation in a crisis stabilization setting. Utilize approved verbal de-escalation, therapeutic communication, and behavioral intervention techniques to reduce risk and promote safety. Apply physical intervention skills only when clinically necessary and in accordance with Diversus Health policies and required training, including Proactive Response Training (PRT) and Handle With Care. Assist licensed staff during crisis events, safety interventions, and emergency responses. Maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic milieu consistent with trauma-informed and recovery-oriented care. Maintain continuous awareness of patient safety, including suicide risk, elopement risk, aggression, and behavioral escalation. Model respectful, professional, and supportive interactions with patients at all times, even during high-stress or volatile situations. Documentation & Communication Accurately document patient observations, care provided, and incidents in the electronic health record according to policy and timelines. Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary team members, including nurses, therapists, case managers, and supervisors. Participate in shift handoffs and team meetings as required. Safety, Compliance & Professional Practice Follow all Diversus Health policies, procedures, and safety protocols, including infection control and confidentiality (HIPAA). Maintain required certifications and complete all mandatory trainings, including crisis intervention and behavioral health competencies. High school diploma or GED. Ability to work effectively with individuals experiencing acute mental health or behavioral crises. Ability to remain calm, professional, and supportive in high-stress or crisis situations. Basic computer skills and ability to document electronically. Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, or a related field. Previous experience in behavioral health, psychiatric, crisis, residential, or inpatient settings. Experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), co-occurring disorders, or substance use disorders. Bilingual (Spanish preferred). Physical & Work Requirements Ability to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods. Ability to assist with patient mobility and physical support as needed. Ability to respond quickly in emergency or crisis situations. Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required by program operations. Training & Compliance Requirements Successful completion of background checks and pre-employment screening. Required certification and ongoing competency in Proactive Response Training (PRT) and Handle With Care for crisis de-escalation and safety interventions. Completion of required crisis unit trainings, including suicide risk monitoring, behavioral observation, emergency response, and trauma-informed care. Ongoing compliance with state, federal, and organizational requirements for crisis services.
