Purpose of Announcement EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO SUPPLEMENT THE CURRENT EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CENTRAL GARAGE. Kind of Work The purpose of this positions is to perform highly skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and construction equipment. The employee in this class acts as "troubleshooter" in determining problems on a wide variety of equipment such as cars, trucks, stationary engines, small pumps, and small portable equipment powered by internal combustion engines fueled with gasoline, diesel, and natural gas. Performs front/end repairs including wheel alignments and some tire balancing. This position repairs transmissions, clutches (single and double disc), electrical systems, changes batteries, starters, alternators and wiring. Test drives vehicles in back lot in order to perform job duties. May supervise subordinate mechanics and/or assistants. Performs related work as required. This position is also an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference. Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination Significant, full-time, paid, verifiable journeyman-level work experience in the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment. NOTE: Employee will be required to furnish all hand tools up to 1" openings. Related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate. Kind of Examination (ENTRANCE AND PROMOTIONAL) The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Leave accrual rates increase with years of service. Any unused annual leave is usually paid upon separation from Parish Employment. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of the premiums for dependents. A Flexible Benefits Plan Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available. Retirement Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees' Retirement System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with 10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service. Tenure Payment Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year. Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid. Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan) Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings. Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.
