Database DevOps Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY We are seeking an experienced Database DevOps Engineer for a 6-month contract position based in Knoxville, TN. This role focuses on integrating database operations with modern DevOps practices, automation, and cloud platforms. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in database management across multiple platforms, CI/CD pipeline integration, and service catalog automation to support enterprise-scale database operations. RESPONSIBILITIESDATABASE INTEGRATION & AUTOMATION Integrate database creation, operations, and management into application patterns and automation frameworks Work with both relational and non-relational databases as part of standard application vending processes Automate database provisioning and configuration workflows Implement database-as-code practices for consistent and repeatable deployments AWS CLOUD DATABASE MANAGEMENT Manage and optimize AWS database solutions including Amazon RDS (PostgreSQL) Work with NoSQL solutions and data warehousing platforms like RedShift Implement best practices for cloud database security, performance, and cost optimization Design and maintain database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies Monitor database performance and implement scaling solutions CI/CD PIPELINE INTEGRATION Incorporate database management tools into CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions Implement automated database schema migrations and version control Integrate DBMaestro or similar database management tools for enterprise database operations Develop and maintain database deployment pipelines Ensure database changes follow proper testing and approval workflows SERVICE CATALOG & STANDARDIZATION Enable standard configurability through selected service catalog tools (ServiceNow, Backstage) Automate configuration of database tools and management as part of service catalog item creation Develop self-service database provisioning capabilities for development teams Create standardized database templates and configurations Onboard teams to standardized database management processes KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER & COLLABORATION Transfer knowledge of standard database management operations and tooling to platform engineering teams Collaborate with development teams to optimize database usage patterns Provide training and documentation on database best practices Support troubleshooting and performance optimization initiatives Mentor team members on database automation and DevOps practices QUALIFICATIONSREQUIRED EXPERIENCE 5+ years of database administration and management experience 3+ years of experience with AWS cloud database services Strong background in DevOps practices and CI/CD pipeline development Experience with database automation and infrastructure-as-code TECHNICAL SKILLSDatabase Technologies: Amazon RDS (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server) NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB, etc.) Data warehousing solutions (RedShift, Snowflake) Database performance tuning and optimization Database backup, recovery, and high availability DevOps & Automation: GitHub Actions or similar CI/CD platforms Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation) Configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet) Containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) Scripting languages (Python, Bash, PowerShell) Database Management Tools: DBMaestro (preferred) or similar database lifecycle management tools Database migration and schema management tools Database monitoring and alerting solutions Version control for database schemas and scripts Service Catalog & Platform Tools: ServiceNow platform administration Backstage developer portal (preferred) API development and integration ITIL framework knowledge PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, Database Specialty) Experience with GitOps workflows Knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies Background in platform engineering or site reliability engineering Experience with observability and monitoring tools (DataDog, New Relic)
