Overview Join the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and be part of an innovative research team tackling significant energy and environmental challenges. As part of our Energy and Environment Directorate, you'll contribute to modernizing the power grid and advancing renewable energy technologies to create a sustainable energy future. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work alongside experts in the Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division. You'll delve into research areas including energy efficiency, electric grid modernization, and the integration of renewable energy, storage, and electric vehicles into the power grid. Responsibilities We are currently seeking enthusiastic PhD students who are eager to gain hands-on research experience in their fields. Our 10-week paid summer internship, as part of the Energy and Environment Internship Program (EEIP), begins on May 26, 2026 or June 19, 2026. You'll work closely with a mentor and be assigned to a project group focused on one of the following areas: Power Systems Engineering: Focus on grid architecture, communications, modeling, simulation, and security. Energy System Analytics and Control: Get involved in analytics, control theory, optimization, and advanced computing. Building System Sciences & Engineering: Engage in building energy modeling, electrical systems design, and optimization. Policy, Markets and Deployment: Work on market design, economic analysis, and energy transition planning. This internship will provide you with an enriching research experience, professional development opportunities, and the chance to network with esteemed scientists and engineers across PNNL.
