RESPONSIBILITIES OF A LIFEGUARD: Maintains active surveillance of the pool area; including all levels of the water and surrounding areas. Ensure safety of all members and participants in and around the pool. Learn valuable lifesaving skills in a leadership role. This is not an exhaustive list of job duties. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may be assigned. REQUIREMENTS TO BE A LIFEGUARD: Minimum age of 16. Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods in a wide range of weather conditions. Communicate with others immediately when responding to an incident or an emergency. Ability to think in the abstract, solve problems, and make quick decisions under stress. Have adequate memory skills to be able to retain and apply lifeguard training knowledge. Ability to effectively communicate information with members, peers, and supervisors. Must be observant, safety conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency.
