Department/Unit: Pathology Hospital Work Shift: Day (United States of America) Salary Range: $95,182.78 - $152,292.45 The Pathologists' Assistant Lead will contribute to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine by performing a variety of tasks related to the gross and frozen section rooms. As the Pathologists' Assistant Lead, s(he) will have operational oversight of the gross room including all staff and trainees working in this area. Main responsibilities include but not limited to: gross examination and prosection of surgical pathology specimens, supervision and training of the Residents, Pathologist Assistants and Histotechnologists in gross examination and prosection, gross photography and archiving, tissue banking and intraoperative frozen section consultation. As the supervisor of the gross and frozen section rooms, s(he) will manage the day-to-day operations of each area based on patient care needs, and regulatory and quality standards. S(he) will serve as the point person for implementation of new technology in the gross room and ensure the gross room is continually clean, in order and well-supplied for optimal operation. Job Description The Pathologist Assistant has expertise and leadership in these areas. This position requires the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility for technical and administrative decisions in collaboration with the laboratory director(s), AP manager and supervisors of other anatomic pathology laboratories. Other critical aspects include project management, budget development and maintenance; and management of supplies and resources. The Pathologist Assistant Lead is responsible for the policies and procedures that govern the these area. The Lead Pathologist Assistant has management responsibility for other Pathologist Assistants. In this capacity the Lead Pathologist Assistant is responsible for hiring, orientation, training and competency assessment of the other Pathologist Assistants as well as day-to-day supervision of their activities. In addition, s(he) is responsible for the training, orientation and competence assessment of the Residents and Histotechnologists in gross examination and prosection. The Pathologists' Assistant, under the direction and supervision of a pathologist, can assist in all aspects of anatomic pathology, participates in seminars, provides instruction for Residents, medical students and departmental staff concerning technique and protocol in autopsy and surgical pathology. Pathologists' Assistants can do all work leading up to but not including diagnosis. They are qualified to do complex surgical resections (pelvic exenterations, whipple procedures, etc.) and autopsies including gross, PAD/FAD , and clinical summary. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Prior experience in a hospital/health care lab performing intraoperative frozen section consultation, gross dissection, analysis and dictation of surgical pathology specimens and autopsies. EDUCATION, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION AND/OR CERTIFICATION Post Baccalaureate training in anatomic and clinical pathology strongly preferred. New York State licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist (or Technician) or Certified Histological Technician or Pathologist Assistant Certification by American Association of Pathologists' Assistants (AAPA), highly desirable Graduation from a Baccalaureate Pathologists' Assistant program or successful completion of a Master's program from an approved school of Pathologists' Assistants. OR Bachelor's degree in sciences with background in physiology and anatomy with five to seven years' experience in pathology as a Pathologist Assistant.
