Benefits: 401(k) 401(k) matching Competitive salary Health insurance Paid time off Training & development Job Type: Full-time Description: Join our team as a Highway Construction Inspector, where you will play a crucial role in overseeing heavy highway, road, and bridge construction and maintenance projects. You will monitor contractors to ensure quality control and adherence to contract specifications, all while working under the guidance of a Senior Construction Inspector or a Construction Manager. Responsibilities: Perform material testing and inspections, or oversee third-party material testing. Take field measurements and read and interpret plans and contract documents related to structures, bridges, and roadways. Inspect various aspects of project installations, including excavations, drainage facilities, soil, aggregate placement, concrete placement, structure installations, and paving operations. Document pay quantities for current and final estimates and complete a daily summary of construction activities. Maintain daily interactions with contractors, including the ability to advise on compliance and recommend necessary adjustments. Report construction operation statuses to the Senior Inspector or Construction Manager. Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard surveying and engineering equipment. Inspect erosion and sediment control installations for environmental compliance and monitor BMP installations. Ensure safety by inspecting roadway traffic control and work zone safety. Keep detailed project records, including daily diaries, materials notebooks, and monthly estimates. You will regularly use field and office equipment such as computers, tablets, digital cameras, surveying tools, and field-testing equipment. Expect to encounter various physical demands, including standing, walking, climbing, and lifting. Work Schedule: This is a full-time role with typical hours averaging 40 or more per week. Day shifts usually begin between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. and may extend for 8 to 10-hour durations. Flexibility for night or weekend work may be required, depending on project needs. Travel: Most job assignments involve local travel but may require regional travel or overnight stays for assignments beyond 90 miles from home. Qualifications: A minimum of three years of highway construction inspection experience is required. Candidates should have a solid understanding of: roadway, structure, and bridge construction methods, materials, and specifications, as well as familiarity with VDOT standards, federal environmental regulations, and labor requirements. Proficiency in contract management software such as Site Manager or PlanGrid is essential, alongside foundational math skills. Certifications: Candidates must possess and maintain the following certifications: Soil and Aggregate Compaction, Asphalt Field Level I & II, ACI, Pavement Marking, Slurry Surfacing, Surface Treatment, Flagger Certification, Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection, Nuclear Gauge Safety Training, Stormwater Management Inspector Certification, Work Zone Traffic Control, 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training, and GRIT (Guardrail Certification).
