This ambitious task requires our utmost effort every day as we develop the next-generation on-chain platform and redefine the future of the financial system. We are searching for a highly skilled individual who is not just passionate about our mission but believes in the transformative potential of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. We want someone who is eager to make an impact, thrives under pressure, collaborates with top-notch colleagues, and actively seeks constructive feedback to fuel continuous improvement. If you tackle tough problems directly, we want you on our team. Our work culture is dynamic and demanding, designed for high achievers. If you aspire to shape the future alongside exceptional professionals who have high expectations, you won't find a better opportunity than this. Many positions at Coinbase are remote-first, but we value in-person interactions. Attending company-wide and team offsites throughout the year is vital for cultivating collaboration and alignment. The Coinbase Internal Audit team functions as an independent third line of defense, reporting directly to the Coinbase Audit Committee. Our mission is to thoroughly evaluate the effectiveness of governance, compliance, risk management, and control processes. You will play a crucial role in assessing management's capabilities to mitigate potential risks and enhance value for all stakeholders. Responsibilities: Lead the development of innovative model audit practices as part of a global internal audit team, concentrating on the accuracy of algorithms that drive our business operations. Support the internal audit plan by conducting detailed technical model validations and model risk audits, including independent replication, code reviews, conceptual assessments, and back-testing analysis. Oversee the validation of critical Financial Crime Compliance models, such as Transaction Monitoring, Sanctions Screening, Customer Risk Rating, and Fraud detection, ensuring their efficacy and alignment with global regulations. Evaluate and analyze management's responses to audit findings, particularly concerning complex remediation efforts involving data lineage and algorithm adjustments. Create comprehensive technical audit reports on model performance and governance, simplifying complex quantitative concepts for an executive audience. Assist in preparing internal audit materials for the Audit Committee and Board regarding the Model Risk portfolio. Build and maintain robust relationships with Data Science, Engineering, Product, and Compliance teams to foster a culture of excellent model governance. Collaborate with the first and second lines of defense to enhance testing efficiencies and ensure comprehensive model inventory coverage while maintaining third-line independence. Act as a trusted advisor to business partners, identifying opportunities to enhance model accuracy, reduce false positives, and improve operational effectiveness while preserving objectivity. Key Qualifications: A BA/BS in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline. 8+ years of experience, including at least 5 years in Model Risk Management, Model Validation, or Quantitative Audit within financial services or the fintech sector. Expertise in Financial Crime models: Deep knowledge of the logic, data inputs, and tuning methodologies for AML Transaction Monitoring, Sanctions Screening, and Fraud models. Technical skills: Proficient in coding and able to review source code; experience with statistical programming languages like Python, R, SQL, or SAS is essential. Strong understanding of the model development lifecycle and internal control frameworks surrounding data governance and model deployment. Proven project management skills with the ability to handle multiple intricate validations within tight deadlines. Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen focus on quality, precision, and attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; adept at conveying technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Experience in leading and supervising technical or co-sourced teams. Familiarity with auditing machine learning/AI models and an understanding of AI governance frameworks are beneficial. Preferred Attributes: An advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in a quantitative field. Experience in a fast-paced or high-growth tech company. An entrepreneurial mindset with flexibility to navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving startup environment. Knowledge of crypto and blockchain analytics, along with the unique modeling challenges within this domain. Professional certifications such as FRM, PRM, or CAMS-FCI are a plus. Experience auditing machine learning/AI models and familiarity with AI governance frameworks are desirable.
