Job Summary Department-Specific Responsibilities Conduct studies according to established procedure. Support a varied group of investigators, involving work on a wide spectrum of clinical research studies ranging from phase I to IV, investigator and industry initiated, varied disease states and complexities, pediatrics through adults (all ages), at the University Hospital Clinical Research Center (CRC) (both day and night shifts) and the Goodman Hall CRC (day shift). Perform activities such as venipuncture, cannulation, implanted port access/deaccess, Holter monitors, telemetry, vital signs, electrocardiograms. Administer investigational products (oral, intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular, peritoneal, etc.). Respond to investigational drug adverse reactions (including cytokine release syndrome) and other research-related adverse events. Perform serial, timed study procedures at exact timepoints according to the protocol. Administer radioactive materials / viral vectors and collect radioactive / virulent biological samples following guidelines outlined by the Radiation Safety Team and Institutional Biosafety Committee. Collect and process biological samples. Continue informed consent process by educating, explaining, and informing participants of study procedures, medications, and adverse events at study visits. Resolve research-related participant problems and needs. Follow CRC and IU research-related policies and procedures. Provide patient / standard of care (SOC). Administer SOC medications (including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, etc.) per physician orders. Administer fluids, blood products, etc. per physician orders. Provide symptom-and need-based care due to disease state (e.g., wound and ostomy, pain, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, malnutrition). Respond to SOC adverse drug reactions (including cytokine release syndrome) and other SOC adverse events. Utilize nursing assessment skills to observe the participant's general well-being and potential for adverse events. Adapt to changing participant care needs. Observe participant for signs of improvement or decline. Respond to emergency situations based on nursing standards. Obtain consent for administration of blood products. Ensure that the dignity, health, safety, and welfare of participants are given the highest priority at all times. Utilize skills, knowledge, nursing diagnosis, and clinical judgement in order to provide a high SOC. Establish rapport with study participants to provide a high-quality and individualized participant care experience. Maintain safe and clean working environment. Maintain automated external defibrillator (AED) device at the Goodman Hall CRC and code carts (adult and pediatric) at the University Hospital CRC. Maintain continuity between day and night shifts by verbal reporting, documenting actions, irregularities, and continuing needs. Protect study participants and employees by adhering to IU Health and IU infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations. Follow IU Health policies and procedures when completing clinical / SOC procedures. Maintain quality of work Document and report adverse events. Record data obtained in a timely, error-free manner. Complete quality control checks of study data. Maintain accurate records of all work undertaken. Respond to variances in protocol implementation and documentation/ report variances to CRC management and study team. Maintain both study and participant confidentiality. Respond to queries in a timely manner. Assist with development of CRC source documents. Maintain compliance with ethical standards. Ensure operation of equipment by following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; and evaluating new equipment and techniques. Complete projects as assigned. Maintain and provide training and education. Train new research nurses / study coordinators, nursing students, medical assistants, investigational drug pharmacists, and pharmacy students. Assess competency and supervise the work of nursing students and medical assistants. Complete radiation safety training annually. Attend study-specific in-services (or complete self-training if not available for in-service) and CRC training sessions. Demonstrate competency in all aspects of medication administration and adverse drug reactions, including suspected unexpected serious adverse reactions (SUSARS). Demonstrate competency with point-of-care tests annually. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies. General Responsibilities Assess and evaluate the patient's condition, initiate emergency measures as necessary, and intervene appropriately in crisis situations. Provide independent professional care through the application of standing orders. Take vital signs including blood pressure, pain evaluation, expiratory peak flow measurement, pulse, respirations, temperature, height, weight, pulse oximetry. Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Maintain personal and patients` safety with attention to blood borne pathogens, sterility, respirator use and fit testing, negative pressure exam room utilization, psychological distress, and contagious diseases. Administer medications orally, by injection and intravenously, change dressings, and obtain laboratory specimens of potentially infectious material. Analyze data and record analysis and data into electronic medical record (EMR). Set up and assist providers with medical examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures. Educate patients about their diagnosis, contagion, self-care, follow-up, physical and psychological needs. Direct and guide Medical Assistants (MA) in their tasks. Oversee and ensure the proper use, care, and control of medical equipment and medications. Assist nursing administration in the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Qualifications EDUCATION Required Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN). Preferred Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN). WORK EXPERIENCE Required 3 years of nursing experience with 1 year of outpatient nursing. Preferred 1 year as an RN in an outpatient or specialty setting. 1 year of clinical research experience. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES Required Registered Nurse in the State of Indiana upon date of hire. Preferred Obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification. Obtain and maintain Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification. Obtain and maintain Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification. SKILLS Required Ability to simultaneously handle multiple priorities. Demonstrates a high commitment to quality. Strong verbal communication and listening skills. Demonstrates problem solving skills. Possesses strong technical aptitude. Working Conditions / Demands This role requires sedentary work as well as extended durations of moving about the workplace. It requires the ability to move objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and the ability to discern between various objects and devices and to position patients. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
