We invest meaningfully in training and development, empowering you to build your future alongside ours and shape a career unique to your talents, interest, and purpose.THE OPPORTUNITY: We are seeking a Senior SQL Database Developer & Administrator to own the design, performance, reliability, and security of our SQL Server environments. This role combines deep hands-on database development with operational and administrative responsibility, ensuring our databases are performant, secure, and resilient while enabling application teams to move quickly and safely. This role serves as the primary steward of the SQL Server platform and a trusted partner to engineering, architecture, and operations teams. RESPONSIBILITIES Database Design & Development: Design, develop, and maintain SQL Server databases, schemas, tables, views, functions, and stored procedures. Translate business and application requirements into scalable, high-performance data models. Implement and refactor database logic to balance performance, maintainability, and correctness. Lead modernization efforts to reduce reliance on legacy stored procedures and transition to cloud-native data architectures on AWS, including adoption of additional data stores beyond SQL Server. Participate in database code reviews and architectural discussions. Performance & Optimization: Diagnose and resolve query performance issues using execution plans, indexing strategies, and statistics. Proactively monitor and tune performance for high-volume and mission-critical workloads. Identify and mitigate blocking, deadlocks, and concurrency issues. Guide indexing and partitioning strategies across environments. Administration & Operations: Own SQL Server installation, configuration, and ongoing maintenance. Design and maintain backup, restore, and recovery strategies; regularly test restores. Manage upgrades, patches, and version lifecycle planning. Implement and support high availability and disaster recovery solutions (e.g., Always On, failover clustering, log shipping). Security & Governance: Manage logins, roles, and permissions using least-privilege principles. Support auditing, compliance, and data governance requirements. Partner with security teams to remediate vulnerabilities and findings. Ensure sensitive data is protected and access is well controlled. Reliability & Incident Response: Monitor database health, capacity, and resource utilization. Serve as an escalation point during production incidents. Perform root cause analysis and drive preventative improvements. Document standards, runbooks, and operational procedures. Collaboration & Leadership: Partner closely with application developers, DevOps, and infrastructure teams. Provide guidance on database best practices and architectural tradeoffs. Drive strategy and implementation for cloud migration to AWS and integration of diverse data stores to modernize our data platform. Mentor junior developers and administrators. Advocate for pragmatic, scalable database solutions. KEY QUALIFICATIONS: 8+ years of hands-on experience with SQL Server in production environments. Expert-level T-SQL skills and deep understanding of query optimization. Strong experience with: Relational data modeling Indexing strategies and execution plans Transactions, isolation levels, and concurrency Proven experience administering SQL Server, including: Backups and restores Patching and upgrades Security and permissions Experience supporting high-availability, business-critical systems. Familiarity with ETL tools (e.g., SSIS) and data warehousing concepts. Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and big data technologies, with a preference to AWS. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. PREFERRED SKILLS: Experience with SQL Server 2019+ experience. Experience in automotive or manufacturing industry. Strong understanding of machine learning, statistical modeling, and AI techniques. Knowledge of visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Looker. Familiarity with Agile methodologies and project management tools. Experience in designing and implementing complex database solutions in enterprise environments. Experience with: Always On Availability Groups Hybrid or cloud environments (Azure SQL, AWS RDS for SQL Server) CI/CD for database deployments Monitoring and observability tools AWS data services (RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, S3) Database migration and modernization (refactoring legacy code, stored procedure reduction) WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an associate encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
