Job Description The International Student Services Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of International Student Services (ISS) within the Cranwell International Center by providing front-line student support, administrative coordination, and immigration compliance assistance. This role serves as a primary point of contact for students and campus partners, supports office processes and records management, and assists with scheduling and special projects. The position also supports immigration-related processes as a Designated School Official (DSO), assisting with immigration document issuance, SEVIS record maintenance, and federal compliance and reporting requirements, including Optional Practical Training (OPT) and STEM OPT, under established procedures and guidance. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and able to balance customer service and compliance responsibilities within a fast-paced academic environment. Here's what you need to know about the role: 1. You'll be joining the Cranwell International Center, a department that exists to articulate, advocate, and act in support of international students, amplifying their contributions to the Virginia Tech community and to the advancement of the university as more globally oriented and internationally connected. 2. You'll report to the Associate Director of International Student Services. This position is a part-time, calendar-year, non-student wage appointment. 3. You'll be primarily responsible for supporting the International Student Services team by creating a welcoming experience for students at the front desk, managing timely international student inquiries, and providing basic to intermediate immigration support under established guidelines. 4. You'll have the opportunity to grow through a developmental plan, with exposure to immigration advising, compliance processes, and student services operations. Required Qualifications • Associate's degree and/or equivalent related experience. • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage competing priorities within a part-time schedule. • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and attention to detail. • Interest in learning about international student immigration regulations. • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with, professional office practices and procedures. • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills to interact comfortably and respectfully with faculty, staff, and students of diverse cultural backgrounds. • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, particularly Outlook, in a professional setting. • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage competing priorities. • Demonstrated professionalism in handling confidential and sensitive information. • Eligible for Designated School Official (DSO) designation or willing to obtain certification upon hire. Preferred Qualifications • Experience working in Higher Education. • Experience working with Banner, Sunapsis, and/or SEVIS. Pay Band 2 Overtime Status Non-Exempt: Eligible for overtime Appointment Type Regular Salary Information $18 - $21 per hour Hours per week 30 Review Date 03/09/2026 Additional Information - The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check. - The successful candidate must be a US citizen or permanent resident due to export controls. - Unable to sponsor work visas.
