Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence. A Day in the life of a Drafter II may include: • Drafting designs • Preparing quantity calculations • Field investigation • Plan review • Meeting with subject matter experts on plans and designs • Other duties as assigned A Day in the life of a Drafter III may include: • In addition, this level would be able to be completely self-directed in completion of design work prior to engineering approval • Ability to train less experienced employees • Drafting complex and advanced designs Minimum Qualifications:Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Drafter II: Experience: 7 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Drafter III: Experience: 8 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Competencies: Drafter II: Applicable computer software applications and hardware Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures Plan review methods, processes and procedures Computer-aided drafting and design systems Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps Additional Competencies for a Drafter III: Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities Design and plan preparation methods and requirements Higher mathematics Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading Conditions of Employment: Please click this link to read the standard conditions of employment for all positions: Standard Conditions of Employment (TxDOT) This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
