Salary: $19.50 - $20.78 Hourly Location : Sunnyvale, CA Job Type: Casual Job Number: 25-00219 Department: Library and Recreation Services Division: Sports Aquatics and Facilities Opening Date: 01/07/2026 Closing Date: Continuous Description LIFEGUARD OR SWIM INSTRUCTOR (CASUAL) (Job Code: 9421) Hours: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). The City of Sunnyvale is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in employment as a Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor to help wit Essential Job Functions Both positions May include, but are not limited to, the following: Interacts and communicates effectively with children, parents, caregivers, volunteers and City staff Maintains constant surveillance over pool users Attends and participates in in-service trainings and meetings Maintains and stores equipment and supplies Performs related work as required Swim Instructor: Organizes, instructs and helps evaluate swim lessons Sets up and cleans up for swim lessons Lifeguard: Enforces pool rules Keeps the facility clean, safe, and orderly Performs the duties of a swim instructor when required WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, kneeling, stretching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate pool equipment and tools. The position requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to monitor and communicate appropriate pool activity. The need to lift, drag and push, pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation. Minimum Qualifications Swim Instructor: Minimum age is 16 years old Lifeguard: The above, plus A valid American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate (course may be taken after hire). Licenses/Certifications: Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C CA driver's license and a safe driving record OR the ability to supply alternate transportation as approved by the appointing authority.
