Position Summary / Scope of responsibility The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics LLC (CAO) is one of the nation's largest Orthopaedics practices, owned and operated by physicians, with over 60 locations across Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The Nurse Manager is responsible for the day-to-day coordination and supervision of clinical nursing staff within the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This position ensures high-quality patient care, efficient OR operations, and compliance with regulatory and safety standards. The OR Nurse Manager leads and supervises the surgical team, oversees surgical scheduling, manages inventory, and promotes a culture of clinical excellence and teamwork. The Nurse Manager works under the direction of the Director of Nursing (DON) and collaborates with the surgical team, anesthesia providers, and administrative leadership to maintain regulatory compliance, staff competency, and operational excellence. This position will support operations at Watkins Mill Surgery Center, ensuring efficient daily workflows and high-quality patient care delivery. Watkins Mill Surgery Center is a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery center located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, serving the DMV region and specializing in orthopedic surgery and pain management. Primary Responsibilities The incumbent may be asked to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically stated in this description. The duties and responsibilities of the position are to be carried out in a manner that is consistent with the Mission, Core Values and Operating Principles of CAO. Provides leadership to facilitate effective patient care delivery. Oversee daily operations of the OR, ensuring smooth case flow and timely turnover. Coordinate and optimize surgical case scheduling to maximize OR efficiency. Ensure all OR equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and functioning properly. Monitor infection control and safety procedures to maintain a sterile environment. Provide leadership, supervision, and mentoring to OR nurses, surgical techs, and support staff. Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and manage staff schedules and assignments. Lead and participate in the hiring, training, and professional development of OR personnel. Ensure patient safety and adherence to all clinical protocols and standards of care. Act as a clinical resource for complex or emergent situations in the OR. Collaborate with physicians and anesthesia providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Ensure compliance with ASC regulatory standards (CMS, AAAHC, OSHA, etc.). Participate in quality improvement initiatives and data collection activities. Monitor and investigate incident reports or near-miss events, implementing corrective actions as needed. Manage OR supplies and equipment, including procurement and cost containment efforts. Monitor usage and ensure adherence to budgetary guidelines. Ensures consistent compliance with all regulatory and CAO guidelines, policies, and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Reporting Relationships The Nurse Manager reports directly to the Director of Nursing. This role does have direct reports. Required Education and Experience Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license. Associate's degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred. 1-2 years of experience working in an ambulatory surgical care setting or OR required. Circulating nurse/ pre-op nurse/ or PACU nurse experience recommended. 1 year in a leadership or supervisory experience required. Proficient knowledge of medical terminology. Experience collaborating across multiple functions. Experience innovating in a fast-growing work environment and dealing with ambiguity. Competencies / Required Skills and Abilities Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license. Associate's degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred. 1-2 years of experience working in an ambulatory surgical care setting or OR required. Circulating nurse/ pre-op nurse/ or PACU nurse experience recommended. 1 year in a leadership or supervisory experience required. Proficient knowledge of medical terminoloy. Experience collaborating across multiple functions. Experience innovating in a fast-growing work environment and dealing with ambiguity. Physical Demands Must be able to sit for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds unassisted. Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics when making necessary transfers and helping patients with exercises. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting. Some heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a standard work shift. Adequate hearing to perform duties in person and over telephone. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, medical equipment, fax machine, scanner, photocopier, and telephone.
