Work Shifts Time: 4p-12a Days: Mon -Fri Facility: Various facilities on Rikers Island Duties & Responsibilities Under the supervision of a Senior/Supervising Psychiatrist in the Mental Health Service of CHS, this position requires the provision of high quality, team-based psychiatric services including psychopharmacologic interventions, for individuals incarcerated in the New York City jail system. Each of the facilities in the jail system has unique patient population and environmental characteristics; each psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will be matched with the population that most closely meets their clinical expertise, desired work location and schedule, and the clinical needs of the service. Experience working in correctional settings is not required, however the ability to work closely and effectively with multiple other disciplines, including security staff, is critical. Responsibilities Include: Provide psychiatric care, including admission evaluations, follow-ups, and urgent and emergent consultations to individuals with mental health needs Participate in the creation of an individualized treatment plan after discussing the case with the mental health care team, collecting and reviewing psychosocial data, medical history, nursing assessment, and other pertinent information. Evaluate patients for the need for a higher level of care, including hospitalization, and escalate care when clinically appropriate. If a patient is hospitalized, maintain contact with the hospital psychiatric staff to ensure continuity of care. Provide patient education, specifically around issues related to medications and treatment adherence, and aftercare services. Document all activities in the electronic medical record in a timely, concise and clear manner. Integrate nursing and medical concepts in planning care for medically complicated psychiatric patients. Provide consultation to non-prescribing mental health staff and medical staff about diagnosis, treatment and/or the need for psychiatric medication. Counsel patients using advanced psychotherapeutic techniques, including in group settings if needed. Participate in team meetings with the treatment staff, on a daily basis if working on a mental observation unit and on a weekly basis if working in one of the clinics. Engage in clinical supervision, as indicated, with the Supervising or Senior psychiatrist. Provide clinical oversight for psychiatric nurse practitioner trainees, including appropriate direct supervision and documentation of evaluation and feedback. Other duties as assigned by the Senior Psychiatrist or Mental Health Manager for the facility, Medical Director, or Chief of Service for Psychiatry, or their respective designees. Minimum Qualifications 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED); and 2. Current certification to practice as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner issued by the NYSED; and 3. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Department Preferences Department Preferences Demonstrate advanced knowledge of psychopathology in assessing patients in need of mental health treatment, including mental status examination and diagnosis. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of psychopharmacology as it pertains to the patient population being treated and writing prescriptions. Department Preferences Cont. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse and, Current certification as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the New York State Department of Education and, A current certificate issued by the State Education Department to prescribe medication, and, Two years satisfactory experience as a Nurse Practitioner, or two years satisfactory experience as a Registered Professional Nurse, eighteen months of which must be as a Nurse Practitioner At least 3 years of hospital experience both as RN & NP in Behavioral Health An equivalent and satisfactory combination of education and experience may be considered Additional Salary Compensation In addition to base compensation, you may also receive the following based on the Collectively-Bargained Agreement: An annual education differential if you currently possess an appropriate degree in nursing or an allied health discipline from an accredited college or university, as listed below: Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Bachelors in allied health discipline = $900 Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Masters in allied health discipline = $1,200 Doctorate in Education, Nursing Practice or PhD in Nursing (DNP) = $2,500 An annual certification differential of $1,878 if you currently hold an appropriate certification that is nationally recognized in the discipline or area of specialization for which you are employed. An annual nursing experience differential ranging from $1,097 up to $9,100 for up to 10 years of experience if you have outside nursing experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
