Job Title: Engineer I (ENG1) Location: Tuscaloosa, AL 35401 Duration: 3-Year Contract Shift Schedule: Monday - Friday | 8am - 5pm PPE Required: Yes Storm Restoration Support: Yes (including after-hours and out-of-area support) Position Overview The Engineer I (ENG1) is an entry-level engineering role requiring 0-5 years of related experience and a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution. This position supports the design, planning, and construction of electrical power distribution systems to ensure safe, reliable, timely, and economical electric service for residential, commercial, and industrial customers. This is a field-oriented distribution engineering role, not a purely desk-based or design-only position. The role involves customer interaction, field coordination, and participation in emergency and storm restoration activities. Key Responsibilities Design & Engineering Apply engineering processes, design standards, and software tools to design electrical distribution systems Develop design options, cost estimates, and construction specifications Prepare technical documentation and construction packages Customer & Field Interaction Meet with residential, commercial, and industrial customers to assess electric service needs Engineer service solutions and represent the company in a professional manner System Reliability & Maintenance Support routine maintenance and reliability improvement projects Assist with engineering work related to: Roadway relocations Planned infrastructure improvements Residential subdivisions Emergency & Storm Response Participate in after-hours and off-system storm restoration efforts Make sound engineering decisions during emergency situations Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university or college Electrical Engineering strongly preferred 0-5 years of related engineering experience Recent graduates with internship or co-op experience are acceptable Preferred Qualifications Experience in the engineering, design, and construction of electrical distribution systems Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Familiarity with utility and engineering software applications such as: CYME, JETS, CSS, DistGIS, SOCKET, ADMS/OMS (preferred) Knowledge of electrical distribution design standards and practices Understanding of NESC, NEC, and utility safety standards Strong oral and written communication skills Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively Proven problem-solving and decision-making skills Effective time management and organizational abilities Strong safety awareness and compliance mindset Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and leadership potential Willingness to travel out of area or state for storm restoration activities Behavioral Attributes Represent the company professionally in customer and field interactions Apply sound engineering practices to deliver reliable and economical electric service Establish and maintain strong customer relationships Take ownership of assigned work and responsibilities Ideal Candidate Profile Career Level: Entry-level to early-career engineer (0-5 years) Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution Electrical Engineering strongly preferred Work Style: Field-ready and customer-facing Comfortable managing multiple projects Willing to support after-hours and storm-related work Who Is Not a Good Fit Candidates without an engineering degree Candidates with only Mechanical or Civil Engineering backgrounds and no power or distribution exposure Candidates unwilling to relocate near Tuscaloosa, AL Candidates seeking fully remote or desk-only roles Candidates unwilling to participate in storm restoration or after-hours work
