Position Overview We are seeking a Senior Datacenter Network Infrastructure Engineer to help develop the strategic design, implementation and optimization of datacenter and network operations at the Internet Archive. This role will require someone who can architect, deploy and debug solutions to help modernize our datacenter and network operations. About the Internet Archive A non-profit library, headquartered in San Francisco, with an ambitious mission: to provide universal access to all knowledge -- the books, web pages, audio, television and software of our shared human culture. Our engineers, archivists, librarians, and team members have built one of the top 300 websites in the world, The Internet Archive digitizes thousands of books a day and collects a hundred million web pages a week. In its 25+ years, it has built one of the largest digital libraries in the world by working with hundreds of national and international libraries, archives, museums, universities, and non-profits. Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Networking Improvements Investigate and implement modernization and rationalization plans for our network infrastructure Evaluate how to integrate modern SDN and Kubernetes technologies into our networking operations Help design and implement global traffic routing to our various locations around the globe Perform root cause analysis on network disruptions and bottlenecks and strategize on config, hardware and software changes to improve our reliability and efficiency Datacenter Process Improvement and Automation Improve the reliability and efficiency of our datacenters through planning and implementing modern best practices Help determine what the priority and return on investment would be for various improvements Bring more automation and visibility to our datacenters, such as airflow control, power monitoring Participate in and improve the process of how we do everything from rack swaps, RMAs, hold inventory on hand, cable management Be comfortable and interested in working in a unique environment - one of our main datacenters is a converted church! Qualifications & Skills Previous datacenter experience - anywhere from directly running a small DC up to someone architecting large DCs for prominent tech firms Familiarity with datacenter operations such as power infrastructure, structured cabling, DC best practices High level of networking knowledge and enthusiasm - particularly around: WAN-scale physical infrastructure (fiber networking, DWDM, cross-connect practices) peering (BGP, multipath routing, router-level traffic analysis) Comfortable withnix environments In the Bay Area and are willing and able to travel to our facilities to carry out work Exceptional communication and documentation skills Bonus - experience in industrial automation and design, such as: Logging infrastructural data such as power quality and usage, airflow, environmental state Automate airflow patterns through using VFDs, modbus over TCP, etc Occasionally stoop, kneel and crouch Occasionally lift, carry and move objects up to 75 pounds Occasionally ascend/descend or traverse stairs Noise level may be loud at times; noise mitigation protective equipment is provided at all locations Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
