Under limited supervision, performs routine maintenance and major repair duties on a wide variety of landscaping and groundskeeping equipment. Oils, adjusts, and greases equipment. Changes oil, replaces worn parts, and welds damaged equipment when necessary. Repairs transmissions and hydraulic systems, and repairs and overhauls small air-cooled, larger water-cooled and diesel engines. Inspects stalled or damaged equipment in the field and performs necessary repairs quickly in order to minimize lost time of equipment and groundskeeping personnel. Employees of this classification may be required to be available for operational problems, equipment emergencies, widespread storms, power outages, and other operations and maintenance emergencies as deemed necessary by management after normal working hours, weekends and holidays. May also be responsible to perform the duties of other employees in various classes when necessary to meet park operation needs. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments. Minimum Qualifications Functions as a leader over lower-level maintenance and seasonal employees. Assigns and directs work, providing technical guidance and on-the-job training in the use and operation of equipment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Changes oil and lubricates grounds equipment used on County properties, parks, and golf courses to maintain the grounds and roads. Dismantles and overhauls assigned equipment, including large motors, to maintain equipment in proper working order. Tunes and repairs diesel, air, and water-cooled engines of equipment such as trucks, tractors, bulldozers, graders, and groundskeeping equipment to maintain engine efficiency and prevent stalling. Adjusts, sharpens, or replaces blades of lawn mowing equipment including hand mowers, triplexes, locke mowers, gang mowers, and Mott mowers to facilitate grass cutting. Maintains and repairs hydraulic systems of equipment such as road sweepers and backhoes to ensure proper function of equipment while in use. Performs welding tasks necessary in the repair of grounds equipment, using welding torches to join metal together. Maintains, adjusts, and repairs hand and tractor rototillers and bulldozer trucks for leveling, moving, and turning dirt. Maintains records of services performed such as repairs performed, parts used, and other data. Troubleshoots complete electrical systems including ignition and secondary systems that are not functioning properly to return equipment to proper working order. Requisitions repair parts and maintains stock of routine repair and maintenance items to ensure that necessary parts are readily available. Operates power snow removal equipment. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments. ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Assists in other groundskeeping duties when not maintaining or repairing equipment including; lawn mowing, operating a chainsaw to clear or remove fallen trees, limbs, and storm damage; assisting with irrigation repairs as needed; maintenance, landscaping and park improvement projects when needed or requested by higher level staff. May assist with basic building maintenance and repairs involving rough and finish carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting, masonry or concrete work. Transports heavy equipment, including loading and unloading various grounds equipment and towing trailers as needed or requested by higher level staff. Operates large size vehicles and equipment as needed or requested by higher level staff. Drives various vehicles used for transporting work crews, materials, and equipment to and from work sites. Uses a variety of tools and equipment to perform various park maintenance activities such as grooming beaches and snowmobile trails, as well as mowing grass, greens, and fairways. ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to communicate to accurately convey information. Ability to operate grounds keeping equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed outdoors with exposure to weather conditions. IMPORTANT NOTE: The primary purpose of this job description is to set a fair and equitable salary range for this job classification. EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS & ABILITIES A. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Have three (3) years of full-time work experience as a mechanic maintaining and repairing farm or construction equipment, liquid and air-cooled diesel and gas engines, groundskeeping or landscaping equipment, recreational vehicle or automobile engines, or other closely related experience. Such experience to include welding mechanical equipment and repairing hydraulic motors and transmissions. 2. Possess a valid motor vehicle Commercial Driver's License (CDL) group "A" endorsement and air brakes. NOTE: Employees without the required CDL at the time of application must obtain it by the end of the six-month probationary period, at County expense. 3. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for this classification. 4. Successfully complete the six-month probationary period. B. ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS 1. Considerable knowledge of procedures and techniques used in large and smaller groundskeeping and landscaping equipment servicing and repair, including both major and minor repair operations. 2. Considerable knowledge of and skill in using standard tools and equipment utilized in the repair of groundskeeping and landscaping equipment. 3. Considerable knowledge of operating principles of groundskeeping and landscaping equipment, such as hydraulic systems, diesel, air, and water-cooled engines, and other mechanical components of equipment. 4. Considerable knowledge of safety practices and techniques necessary for the safe performance of grounds equipment repair work. 5. Considerable ability to perform both gas and electric welding tasks to repair grounds equipment. 6. Reasonable knowledge of proper snow removal and pavement maintenance. 7. Reasonable knowledge of computer operations. 8. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Physical condition that will permit performing manual duties outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, standing and walking for extended periods, and lifting of heavy objects.
