Position Summary: The IT Director will serve as the strategic technology leader for Colorado Retina Associates, responsible for overseeing all information technology operations, infrastructure, and systems across multiple clinical locations. This role requires a unique blend of healthcare IT expertise, strategic vision, and operational excellence to support our physician-led practice's mission of delivering world-class retinal care while maintaining operational efficiency and regulatory compliance. The IT Director will report to executive leadership and work closely with physicians, practice administrators, clinical staff, external technology partners, and Cencora corporate IT teams to ensure technology investments align with clinical workflows, enhance patient experiences, support active clinical research programs, and meet enterprise-wide standards and requirements. Role and Responsibilities:Strategic Technology Leadership Develop and execute comprehensive IT strategy aligned with practice growth, clinical excellence, and patient-centric care objectives Serve as primary technology advisor to executive leadership on system investments, digital transformation initiatives, and emerging healthcare technologies Lead technology roadmap planning for multi-site practice expansion and integration Evaluate and recommend technologies that improve clinical efficiency, research capabilities, and patient outcomes Partner with Retina Consultants of America network practices to identify best practices and collaborative technology opportunities Coordinate with Cencora corporate IT leadership to align local technology initiatives with enterprise standards, policies, and strategic direction Serve as primary liaison between Colorado Retina Associates and Cencora IT teams for implementation of corporate technology requirements and infrastructure standards Infrastructure & Systems Management Oversee all IT infrastructure across six clinical locations and satellite offices, including network architecture, servers, workstations, medical devices, and telecommunications Ensure 99.9% uptime for mission-critical systems supporting daily clinical operations and surgical scheduling Manage relationships with managed service providers (MSPs), vendors, and technology partners Direct implementation and optimization of electronic health record (EHR) systems, practice management software, and clinical research platforms Oversee imaging systems integration including OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), fundus photography, and other specialized retinal diagnostic equipment Maintain disaster recovery, business continuity, and backup systems across all locations Implement and maintain Cencora corporate IT standards for infrastructure, security, and system architecture across all practice locations Healthcare Compliance & Security Ensure HIPAA compliance across all systems, processes, and third-party relationships Implement and maintain robust cybersecurity protocols protecting patient health information (PHI) Conduct regular security risk assessments and remediation planning Manage security incident response and breach notification procedures Oversee staff HIPAA training and technology security awareness programs Maintain compliance with CMS, CLIA, and other relevant healthcare regulations affecting IT systems Ensure adherence to Cencora corporate cybersecurity policies, data governance standards, and enterprise compliance requirements Coordinate with Cencora security teams on security audits, vulnerability assessments, and incident response protocols Clinical Systems & Interoperability Optimize EHR workflows to support physician efficiency and comprehensive documentation requirements for complex retinal procedures Ensure seamless data exchange with referring ophthalmologists, hospitals, and health information exchanges (HIEs) Support integration of clinical research data systems and trial management platforms Facilitate telemedicine and remote patient monitoring technology implementations Coordinate with clinical leadership on specialty software for inherited retinal disease (IRD), uveitis, and oncology subspecialties Collaborate with Cencora teams to integrate practice systems with enterprise platforms and reporting infrastructure Corporate IT Coordination & Governance Participate in Cencora enterprise IT planning sessions, user groups, and technology governance committees Translate and implement Cencora corporate IT policies, procedures, and standards at the practice level Coordinate technology procurement through Cencora approved vendor relationships and preferred supplier programs Ensure compliance with Cencora IT asset management, software licensing, and technology refresh cycles Provide regular reporting to Cencora leadership on practice IT operations, projects, and performance metrics Leverage Cencora's operational infrastructure and manufacturer services to enhance practice operations and research capabilities Team Leadership & Vendor Management Build, mentor, and lead internal IT support team or coordinate managed IT services Establish service level agreements (SLAs) and performance metrics for internal and external support resources Manage IT budget, including capital expenditures, operational costs, and licensing agreements Negotiate contracts with software vendors, hardware suppliers, MSPs, and telecommunications providers in alignment with Cencora procurement guidelines Oversee help desk operations ensuring responsive support for clinical and administrative staff across all locations Project Management Lead major technology projects including EHR implementations, system upgrades, office expansions, and integration initiatives Coordinate technology aspects of new office openings and ambulatory surgery center integrations Manage projects related to clinical research IT requirements and data management systems Implement process improvement initiatives leveraging Lean methodology principles Ensure minimal disruption to clinical operations during system transitions and upgrades Manage practice-level implementation of Cencora enterprise technology initiatives and standardization projects Innovation & Research Support Support clinical research division with specialized IT infrastructure for trials involving AMD, uveitis, geographic atrophy, oncology, and retinal vein occlusion Evaluate and implement AI technologies and home monitoring systems for improved patient outcomes Explore digital health innovations including patient portals, mobile applications, and automated appointment systems Support CME programs and physician education initiatives with appropriate technology platforms Leverage Cencora's manufacturer services and pharmaceutical partnerships to enhance research program capabilities Education and Experience: • Bachelor's degree in information technology; Computer Science. A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Healthcare Informatics, or related field, preferred • Minimum 7-10 years of progressive IT leadership experience required, with at least 5 years in healthcare settings strongly preferred. • Demonstrated experience managing IT operations for multi-site medical practices or ambulatory care organizations • Proven track record of successful EHR implementations and healthcare system integrations • Experience with specialty medical practices (ophthalmology, retina, or surgical specialties preferred) • Experience working within corporate-owned healthcare organizations or management services organizations (MSOs) strongly preferred • Demonstrated ability to balance local practice needs with enterprise-level corporate IT standards and requirements Technical Expertise • Deep knowledge of healthcare IT systems including EHR/EMR platforms (Epic, NextGen, Modernizing Medicine, or similar) • Strong understanding of HIPAA, HITECH, and healthcare regulatory compliance requirements • Expertise in network architecture, cloud infrastructure, and hybrid IT environments • Experience with medical imaging systems, PACS, and DICOM standards • Proficiency in cybersecurity frameworks and healthcare-specific security protocols • Knowledge of health information exchange (HIE) standards and interoperability requirements (HL7, FHIR) • Understanding of clinical research IT requirements and data management systems • Familiarity with enterprise IT governance frameworks and corporate technology standardization initiatives Leadership & Management Skills • Proven ability to lead technology strategy in physician-owned, physician-led organizations within corporate structures • Experience managing IT budgets exceeding $1M with demonstrated cost optimization • Strong vendor management and contract negotiation skills • Ability to translate complex technical concepts for clinical, executive, and corporate audiences • Excellent stakeholder management skills with ability to navigate both local practice priorities and corporate objectives • Experience collaborating with corporate IT departments and implementing enterprise-wide technology initiatives Personal Attributes • Exceptional problem-solving skills with ability to make sound decisions under pressure • Customer service orientation with commitment to supporting clinical excellence • Strong communication skills with physicians, staff, patients, vendors, and corporate stakeholders • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments and organizational levels • Flexibility to respond to after-hours emergencies and coordinate weekend implementations • Alignment with practice values of patient-centric care and continuous improvement • Diplomatic approach to balancing local practice autonomy with corporate governance requirements Preferred Skills/Experience: Experience with Retina Consultants of America network practices or Cencora-affiliated organizations Background in clinical research IT systems and regulatory compliance (21 CFR Part 11, GCP) Knowledge of ophthalmology-specific software and diagnostic equipment Experience implementing patient engagement technologies and digital health solutions Familiarity with Lean methodology and process optimization in healthcare settings Established relationships with healthcare IT vendors and MSP providers in the Colorado market Previous experience in healthcare organizations transitioning to or operating within corporate ownership structures Understanding of pharmaceutical distribution and specialty pharmacy operations Certificates & Licenses: Project management certification (PMP, PRINCE2, or equivalent) preferred ITIL or healthcare IT certifications (CHCIO, CPHIMS, CISSP) highly valued
