Job Type Temporary Description JOB TITLE: Lifeguard STATUS: Seasonal; Seasonal, Temporary, and non-city positions are not eligible for City of Converse benefits. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason. FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of the facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. Duties will include proper operation and maintenance of pool equipment. Must be in good physical and mental condition and maintain professional work-related practices - good judgment, common sense, safety, alertness, dependability, responsibility, initiative, tact, courteousness, cleanliness, endurance, and the ability to work with patrons of all ages. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: The Lifeguard, with or without reasonable accommodation, performs essential job duties including but not limited to: Rescuing distressed patrons, using correct rescue techniques and equipment; Ensuring the safety of swimmers, patrons and others; Responding quickly to all emergency situations; Observing activities in assigned areas to detect hazards, disturbances, or safety infractions; Examining injured persons and administering first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if necessary, using proper training and medical supplies and equipment; Prevents accidents and eliminate or minimize hazardous situations; Administers emergency first aid as needed and contacts emergency medical personnel in case of serious injury. Brushes and vacuums pool daily; Communicates to other lifeguards and facility staff the need for additional assistance or equipment in an emergency; Maintains quality of pool water and proper pool chemistry by testing pool water and adding chemicals as required; Cleans restrooms, including scrubbing toilets, sanitizing the restrooms, restocking toilet paper; Observes and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility; Warns recreational participants of inclement weather, unsafe areas, or illegal conduct; Inspects recreational and safety equipment and report problems, concerns or unsafe conditions or equipment to supervisors; Instructs patrons in swimming or other appropriate recreational activities and provide safety precaution information; Educates patrons and informs them of the purpose of and the need for rules and regulations; Assists with swimming lessons as required; Works safely and maintains a clean, safe, sanitary pool and facility; Handles and protects cash when working in the pool office; Follows City policies, procedures and the instructions of his/her supervisors or person in charge; Attends training sessions and meetings as scheduled; Treats others respectfully; promotes harmony; contributes to a positive team spirit and shows respect and sensitivity for diversity and cultural differences; adapts to a changing environment; Assists others; be helpful, cooperative and courteous, and demonstrate a good attitude in all dealings with the public, co-workers and others; Reports in a timely manner all issues, concerns and questions to the supervisor or others as appropriate in the chain of command, and communicates issues and events effectively with other shifts; Takes up matters affecting his or her position with the immediate superior and through proper channels; Is punctual and in attendance on a regular basis; Demonstrates initiative and diligence in the prompt and proper completion of all job duties, whether or not listed in this Job Description; Safeguards City property and recognizes and reports needed repairs; Works safely, follows safety rules and training, and maintains a clean, safe working environment; Maintains confidentiality with regard to all City business; Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Be at least sixteen (16) years of age; Possess and maintain current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid; and Successfully complete pre-employment medical/physical/drug tests and background check before final placement. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Onsite Pool Manager, Onsite Pool Assistant Manager, Head Lifeguard and Pool Manager. Does not supervise any staff. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the public, co-workers and others. ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Previous lifeguard experience and/or experience in some area of swimming pool operations preferred. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: In order to successfully achieve the goals of the Public Works Department, the Lifeguard must meet the following physical and mental requirements with or without reasonable accommodation. Be a strong swimmer. Be able to know when a patron is in distress or danger. Lift or move objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and interact effectively with co-workers and the public. Sit or stand for long periods. Frequently stoop/bend, push, reach and pull objects at/from varying heights. Occasionally engage in repetitive motion involving the hands, arms and legs as in swimming and running. Learn and remember information and details relating to the job. Ability to concentrate on and complete tasks and to understand, learn, and communicate information about the job. Ability to understand the meaning of and use and speak words understandably and effectively in the English language. Good hearing and listening abilities, that is, the Lifeguard must be able to hear spoken words from patrons, co-workers, supervisors and others. Good motor coordination skills, that is, the Lifeguard must be able to coordinate his or her eyes, hands and feet rapidly and accurately in order to swim and run in response to visual, auditory and other stimuli. Work under pressure and deadlines in order to respond to the public and co-workers. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: A Lifeguard must have the ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to do many things well, including but not limited to: Be a strong swimmer and understand safe lifeguarding methods, current rescue techniques and procedures, and first aid application and resuscitation; Be in good physical and mental condition and maintain professional work-related practices including but not limited to good judgment, common sense, safety, alertness, dependability, responsibility, initiative, tact, courteousness, cleanliness, endurance, and the ability to work with patrons of all ages; Provide good customer service, including assessing patron's and guest's needs, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluating customer satisfaction; Monitor and assessing performance of yourself and your work to make improvements or take corrective action; Listen to give full attention to what others are saying; taking time to understand the points being made; asking appropriate questions; and not interrupting inappropriately; Use good judgment and making good decisions; Actively look for ways to help people; Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems; Get along well with others and be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do; Adjust actions in relation to others' actions and a changing environment; Know or anticipate when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong; Talk to others to convey information effectively; communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand; See details at a distance; Apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense; Have good hearing and be able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences; identify and understand the speech of another person; Concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted; Speak clearly so others can understand.
