We are excited to announce that we are actively seeking students to join our Police Cadet Program. This is a work-training program for college students interested in a law enforcement career. The Police Cadet performs various law enforcement station and field duties including the handling of public inquiries; relieving sworn officers of non-sworn police officer duties; operating communication equipment; performing various clerical and routine office duties; conducting surveys; writing reports; fingerprinting, and performing other related duties as required. This is a non-sworn, part-time/temporary position. The Corona Police Department is made up of over 250 officers and professional staff which is comprised of three divisions: Field Services, Investigative Services, and Support Services. Our mission is to ensure the safety and security of our community while maintaining trust through transparency. The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge & Education Must be within one semester of satisfactory completion of high school or successfully completed the twelfth (12th grade) or equivalent GED. Candidates that do not include this information will be disqualified from consideration. andMust be enrolled in a college or university with full accreditation status granted by an institutional or specialized accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation with a course load of 6 or more semester units (9 quarter units) in Police Science, Administration of Justice, or a closely related field and maintain a grade "C" average or higher. Course work must be approved by the Chief of Police Skills & Abilities Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax. Ability to use modern office equipment and communication tools used for business functions. Experience Candidates must be at least 17 years and 6 months of age and must be appointed prior to 21 years and 6 months of age. Must possess a valid California, Class C Driver's License to be maintained throughout employment along with satisfactory driving record. The Organization The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. Therefore, enrollment in the Nationwide PST 457 retirement program is mandatory and requires a contribution of 7.5% of base earnings. The City contributes 1.3% and the employee contributes 6.2% of base earnings. Most part-time shifts for temporary/part-time employees must not exceed 999 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). If an employee is an active CalPERS member they may work up to 28 hours per week. There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.
