Description: The Surgical Technologist Certified functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse. Assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. Has the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases. Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases. Demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes initiative to discuss the surgical plan with other members of the healthcare team. Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment. Anticipates any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Ability to mentor, precept, or train in various modalities. Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Duties include preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment, maintaining the sterile field and other patient safety concerns. Gathers required instruments and supplies and serves as a surgical assistant as needed. Other duties may include assisting with inventory, ordering, and stocking perioperative areas. Ensures compliance with safety standards at all times. Call or late coverage may be required related to the facility in which the Surgical Tech is working. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions: Has the knowledge, skill, and ability of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team. Checks supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure, which includes reviewing and utilizing appropriate preference cards. Assists with room setup, including the opening of sterile supplies. Sets up the sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed for the procedure in a timely manner. Performs surgical counts with the circulator. Actively participates in the procedure pause/time-out. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves the surgeon and assistants. Assists in draping the sterile field. Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure and maintains an organized back table and operative field. Anticipates and offers guidance to the surgeon throughout the procedure. Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure. Prepares sterile dressings and actively participates in post-procedure pauses. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Applies principles of asepsis to prevent infection and ensure patient safety. Prepares case carts according to procedures and preference cards. Observes patient conditions and reports any changes to the physician and Registered Nurse. Plans for the next steps in the procedure, demonstrating the ability to adjust when emergencies arise. Prepares OR rooms for receiving patients, which includes stocking and cleaning equipment or storage areas. Maintains financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment. Provides relationship-based, patient-centered care. Always partners with the patient by verifying procedures and conducting bedside shift reports. Practices using current clinical standards under the supervision of the registered nurse. Supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability. Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration for a positive work environment. Acts as a patient advocate, providing comfort and safety measures. Assists other team members with cleaning the room between cases and preparing for the next patient. Practice Development: Completes all required competencies and mandatory education. Provides a positive learning environment for students and new hires. Strives to uphold standards of behavior in daily work activities. Participates in any new training related to policies, processes, or equipment. Maintains knowledge of new technology and procedures introduced by surgeons. Achieves twenty hours in continuing education related to the field per evaluation period. Other Duties as Assigned: Supports licensed staff as requested. Cares for surgical equipment and accessories. Ensures the organization and cleanliness of the surgical area. Maintains stock and medical supplies. Assumes responsibility for other duties as assigned. Completes all requirements by planning with charge nurses and managers.
