Assists the Deputy County Attorney and the County Attorney in providing general legal services for the County School administration and all other boards, commissions, authorities and agencies of the County; does related work as required. Essential Duties The Henrico County Attorney's Office is seeking an attorney to join our human services practice group and serve as full-time counsel for the Department of Social Services. The successful candidate will provide a wide range of in-house legal services to DSS and will regularly appear in court and directly manage client relationships. Specific job duties will include: Independently handling litigation in the County's Juvenile and Domestic Relations, General District, and Circuit courts and state courts of Virginia Serving as "first chair" litigator in major court cases and managing significant caseload, including interviewing witnesses and preparing and reviewing exhibits, legal research, and evidentiary motions Training agency staff and other stakeholders in legal aspects of their job responsibilities Providing legal advice to clients regarding emerging and ongoing matters Reviewing legislation regarding DSS matters, notifying affected agencies of possible legislative enactment, and advising after enactment to ensure compliance Reviewing decisions of the Virginia Court of Appeals and Virginia Supreme Court pertaining to child dependency matters, and advising clients of impacts to existing policies and practices Providing support and expertise pertaining to juvenile law matters to colleagues The ideal candidate will possess outstanding advocacy and communication skills, exhibit good professional judgment, and have a proven track record of working cooperatively and effectively in a team-based environment. Applicants should have a strong academic background, excellent research and writing skills, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, public officials and the general public, and a desire to serve the community. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of law; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Additional Information Prior experience in social services law and demonstrated interest in local government is highly preferred. At the time of application, applicants must have a Juris Doctor degree and be a member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing. At least 2 years of experience in the practice of law is preferred. This position may be filled at the Assistant County Attorney I, II, III, or Senior level depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate and the needs of the office at the time of hire. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
