MARYVILLE COLLEGE STAFF POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: Counselor - Student Mental Health & Recovery Support Department: Counseling Center Title of Immediate Supervisor: Director of Counseling Funded Term / Work Cycle: 10.5-month Expected Daily Work Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Expected Weekly Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; evenings/weekends as needed Pay Grade: 8S Starting Salary Expectations: $51,263 - $56,389; with starting salary determined based on relevant experience, qualifications, and demonstrated competencies. Position Purpose The Counselor - Student Mental Health & Recovery Support provides direct clinical counseling services to Maryville College students experiencing mental health challenges, substance use concerns, and recovery needs. This role supports student well-being and academic success through evidence-based counseling, crisis intervention, group support, and coordinated care as part of the College's Bridges to Wellness initiative. SUMMARY The Counselor serves as a primary clinician within the Counseling Center, providing individual and group counseling services to students with a wide range of mental health, emotional, behavioral, and substance-related concerns. The Counselor works closely with Counseling Center staff and campus partners to ensure timely, confidential, and trauma-informed care. This role focuses primarily on direct clinical service delivery and on collaborating with the Prevention & Wellness Education Specialist, who leads prevention programming and grant reporting. Education and Experience required to ensure success in this position: Education Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a closely related field. Experience Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical counseling experience required(college-age population preferred) Licensed or Licensed-Under-Supervision required Demonstrated experience providing mental health counseling and crisis support Experience working with substance use, recovery support, and co-occurring concerns preferred Group facilitation experience strongly preferred ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Leadership and Collaboration Collaborate with Counseling Center staff to provide integrated student mental health and recovery support Coordinate with the Prevention & Wellness Education Specialist to ensure students receive both clinical care and prevention resources Partner with Student Affairs, Residence Life, Disability Services, and campus leadership to support student wellbeing Participate in interdisciplinary care coordination and referral processes Support peer recovery or support initiatives as clinically appropriate Data, Technology, and Compliance Maintain confidential counseling records in accordance with ethical standards, FERPA, HIPAA, and licensure requirements Document clinical services accurately and in a timely manner within Counseling Center systems Provide basic service utilization data (e.g., session counts) to support grant tracking under Director oversight Utilize electronic health record systems and campus technologies appropriately Stakeholder and Institutional Support Provide individual counseling services for students experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, substance misuse, or other mental health concerns Facilitate counseling groups and recovery-oriented support services for students Provide crisis intervention, consultation, and referral support as needed Assist students in navigating social, emotional, and cognitive challenges in pursuit of academic and personal success Promote a supportive, stigma-free environment where students feel safe seeking help Operations and Technical Oversight Provide evidence-based counseling interventions aligned with best practices for college mental health and substance recovery Support development and facilitation of counseling groups or clinically focused workshops as assigned Coordinate with community providers and treatment partners for referrals and continuity of care Participate in Counseling Center outreach efforts as needed to support student engagement Strategic Planning and Sustainability Support Bridges to Wellness goals through high-quality clinical care and recovery support Participate in ongoing professional development related to college mental health, trauma-informed care, and substance recovery Maintain awareness of emerging best practices impacting student wellbeing and retention Other Serve as a designated employee responsible for handling sensitive student health information appropriately Perform other responsibilities and special projects as assigned to advance the College's mission and maintain a respectful, collaborative learning environment NOTE: Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty, and students. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong clinical knowledge of mental health and substance use concerns affecting college students Ability to provide culturally responsive, trauma-informed counseling support Skill in crisis assessment, intervention, and referral coordination Ability to communicate effectively with students, families (as appropriate), faculty, and staff Strong organizational and documentation skills Commitment to ethical practice and student-centered care License, Certification, or Registration Necessary: Training or certification in substance use counseling or recovery support is a plus Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer Ability to occasionally work evenings or weekends for student-related needs Professional office environment with frequent student interaction Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment: Standard office equipment: computer, phone, electronic health record systems, etc.
