ABOUT THIS POSITION The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through the efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services. The Fleet Services Division is looking for Auto Master Technicians to per form skilled advanced journey-level mechanical and technical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of City vehicles, including Police and Fire vehicles, light to heavy-duty trucks, cars, and other related vehicles and equipment. Auto / Auto Master technicians perform regular preventative maintenance, schedule and conduct safety inspections, test drive vehicles, and record repairs and services on work orders. Incumbents exercise considerable independence in diagnosing drivability, repairing deficiencies, and verifying proper performance and are assigned the most technically challenging work orders, which require greater knowledge and skills. Currently, there are multiple vacancies for Auto / Auto Master Technicians at various locations within the city. The Fleet Automotive Master Technician assignment requires a "Master" certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) at the time of hire. In addition to serving as leads, Master Technicians at the Police Briefing Stations monitor the station's day-to-day operations, assign work orders, direct and monitor the work of Equipment Service Workers I and II, order parts, and track inventory for the station. Some positions may require emergency response during severe weather (floods, storms, etc.). Opportunity to Underfill at the Automotive Technician level Individuals that do not meet the minimum requirements below for the Automotive Technician Master Technician may qualify for the opportunity to underfill at the Automotive Technician level. The Automotive Technician maintain, diagnose, and repair automotive equipment (e.g., cars, light trucks and related equipment that requires the mechanic to have a high degree of technical ability. Candidates selected to underfill are promoted to Automotive TechnicianMaster Technician after successfully achieving the educational requirements for the job. This must be completed within two years of hire date. Candidates at both levels should apply to this recruitment. IDEAL CANDIDATE Ideal candidates will possess: Auto Master ASE required for police vehicles and equipment shop assignment. Verifiable recent employment in automotive repair within last 5 years. Proficient using fleet maintenance management software (i.e., Fleet Focus M4, M5, Faster Asset Solutions) to enter repair information. Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Emissions certification. SALARY Automotive Technician - Master Technician Pay Range: $26.18 to $40.61 per hour. Hiring Range: $26.18 to $31.82 per hour. Automotive Technician - Underfill Pay Range: $24.93 to $36.84 Hiring Range: $24.93 to $30.31 Pay Range Explanation: Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification. Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity. Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 245. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance. Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase. Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease. Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade. OR Four years of experience as an Equipment Service Worker II. OR an Associate's degree in automotive technology from an accredited college. Plus two years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and computerized diagnostics of automotive equipment. Graduation from an accredited automotive trade school may be substituted for six months of experience. Experience working with alternative fuel and diesel fuel automotive equipment is highly desired. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. The City job descriptions: Automotive Technician and Master Technician . Work and Environmental Conditions Requirements: Some vacancies may occur on second / third shift. Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required. Certifications and Tools: The Automotive Master Technician position requires an ASE Automotive Master certification at time of hire. For underfill candidates: the eight ASE certifications must be obtained within the first 12 months. All positions require a motor vehicle air conditioning Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), section 609, certification issued by an EPA certified testing agency at time of hire. Some positions require a State of Arizona Vehicular Emissions Inspector Certification and/or alternative fuel/diesel fuel certification(s) at the time of hire. Incumbents must provide their own hand tools, pneumatic tools and toolbox. Note: technicians are provided a tool allowance of $600 annually in September towards this purpose. Prescreening and Driving: All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position. Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The minimum qualifications listed above, plus: Experience with: Alternative fuel systems to include but not limited to, CNG vehicle conversions, testing and repair. Diesel fuel automotive equipment. Hybrid vehicles. Electrical and emission system diagnostics associated with police fleet vehicles (O.E.M. and Police Accessories). General Motors vehicle platforms.
