Definition: The Head Water Safety Instructor is responsible for overseeing and managing the swim lesson program. This position involves supervising the training and performance of swim instructors, ensuring compliance with water safety protocols, and creating an effective learning environment for swimmers of all ages and skill levels. The role also requires fostering positive relationships with both customers and staff to enhance the overall program experience. Key responsibilities include providing guidance on water safety practices, offering feedback and support to instructors, and ensuring a safe and educational atmosphere for all participants. Principal Duties: • Lead, manage, and assist Swim Instructors. • Assist with training and evaluating of swim instructor staff. • Routinely work with Swim Instructors to improve and practice their swim instruction skills. • Ensure that employees report to work on time and are placed in their proper assignments, contact replacements, and complete employee counsel forms as needed. • Oversee the swim lesson program in the absence of the Specialist, Coordinator or Supervisor. • Handles and/or reports any problems in staff relationships to the Specialist, Coordinator or Supervisor. • Communicates appropriate information to peers and supervisors in a timely manner, follows established communication methods as directed by supervisory team. • Emails end of shift reports to supervisory staff at the end of each assigned shift. • Enforce policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of staff and patrons using the pool. • Ensures proper signage and ropes are in place each shift before the start of swim lessons. • Ensure participants are in correct classes based on skills at the beginning of each new session and find solutions for moving and teaching all students. • Facilitate swim lessons or water safety education and activities during unexpected situations due to temporary pool closures. • Complete, submit, review and maintain variety of forms and files: incident, accident, attendance sheets, skill checklists, and report cards. • Defuse conflict situations professionally resulting in a positive resolution with staff, supervisors and patrons. • Builds community and professional relations with patrons and swimmers participating in swim lessons. • Observe, follow and enforce established policies and procedures regarding staff, facility, programs, and safety protocols in the daily conduct of the job. • Assist in planning for, attend and run swim instructor trainings. • Teach and/or co-teach Longmont Swim Instructor and Longmont Swim Aide classes. • Provide mentoring and constructive guidance to both novice and experienced instructors. • Conduct Swim Instructor Orientations for newly hired staff. • Assist in administrative tasks including time sheet accuracy and completeness, distribution of schedules, and other recreation registration software tasks. • For each new session of swim lesson completes the following before start date: cancel classes with low enrollment, create new classes when possible, process refunds and transfers, communicate to patrons in person or via email about any class changes, assign and communicate instructors to their sets, and ensure instructor sets are published and correct on scheduling software. • Ensure evaluations are readily available and actively encourage patrons on the last day to fil these out. Make sure they are turned into the Swim Lesson Specialist and/or Recreation Coordinator in a timely manner. • Manage inventory of swim instructor equipment. • Promote programs and recruits new participants through various marketing efforts within the organization. • Performs essential duties and additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes. Working Environment: Work is primarily conducted in a pool environment with exposure to water, chlorine, and other pool chemicals. Work is performed either indoors or outdoors and involves exposure to hot and cold temperatures, high humidity, direct sun and/or moderate to loud background noise. Work requires frequent use of fingers and hands, walking and standing, swimming/being in and around pools, hearing, speaking, problem solving, verbal and written communication and customer contact, handling multiple tasks with frequent interruptions, slippery/uneven walking surfaces, working alone or working closely with others, frequent bending/stooping, and kneeling. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Qualifications: Previous experience supervising Swim Instructors and swim lesson programs, or a combination of Water Safety Instructor experience plus mentoring experience or demonstrated skills/training in leadership or supervision. Prior customer service experience. Experience teaching Adults, Teens, Parent-Tot classes, City of Longmont's in-house preschool program and BLAST swim program are preferred.
