Program Overview The Nurse Residency Program focuses on training licensed Registered Nurses who are new to the operating room environment. This comprehensive internship equips nurses with essential skills for providing safe patient care during surgery. This program is open to nursing professionals in various facilities within the TriStar medical center network. Participants will begin as a cohort, attending didactic classes together, while clinical hours will be completed at their designated facility. An active nursing license in good standing for the state of Tennessee or Kentucky is required to participate. AORN Periop 101: A Core Curriculum Utilizing the AORN Periop 101 curriculum, this program offers a thorough online education based on current guidelines. As a Nurse Resident, you will receive a complimentary one-year membership to AORN, which provides access to valuable resources and continuing education. Final Examination Following the completion of the educational modules and classroom theory, participants will take a proctored final exam consisting of 115 questions. An 80% passing score is required, and residents will have three attempts to succeed. Clinical Requirements During the five-month program, participants will work five 8-hour days, Monday through Friday, with clinical start times aligning with their preceptor's schedule. Regular meetings with instructors and managers will monitor progress throughout the residency. Attendance Policy Strict attendance is required for all didactic sessions, with specific policies in place for clinical attendance. Missing lectures or simulation days is not permitted. Graduation Criteria To graduate from the program, Nurse Residents must: Achieve a score of 80% or higher on the AORN Periop 101 Exam Maintain a final grade of 75% or higher Complete all assignments and assessments Attend at least one Middle Tennessee Chapter AORN meeting Residents not meeting these criteria will work with surgery management and education teams to develop a personalized action plan.
