Student Worker - General Chemistry Lab TA Number of Openings: 8 Purpose/Objective of the Role: Assist in the General Chemistry lab Tasks & Responsibilities: Prepare for every laboratory meeting by reading the laboratory experiment in the laboratory manual. You should understand every step of the procedure. Familiarize yourself with the pre-lab assignments such that you can help students with questions they may have about the assignment. If you have difficulty with #1 or #2, it is your responsibility to see the instructor before lab. You must come to lab prepared. Show up on time to perform your duties. Assist the laboratory instructor in duties directly related to the delivery of the lab. Receive laboratory safety training. See Dr. Grunkemeyer. Follow all safety guidelines; wear goggles and appropriate clothing. Circulate among the students in the laboratory section, helping students with questions as they have them. Watch students to be sure they are using proper technique. Correct them when they show poor technique. Do not just give students the answers. Lead them through the reasoning that will guide them to right way of thinking about problems in lab. Make sure students have returned common equipment (such as centrifuges and glassware) to the proper location at the end of lab. Make sure students have cleaned up their work area at the end of lab. Qualifications/Skills: Applicants should have successfully completed one year of CHEM 110/111 before applying for this position. Potential Future Career Benefit: Peer leadership experience, insight into TA responsibilities in graduate school. NOTE: Employment sponsorship is not available for this position.
