It is a teaching hospital with special designations as a Chest Pain Center and a Stroke Center of Excellence. The unit consists of 10 beds with an average daily census of 8 patients. The RN to patient ratio is 1:5, with 1 CNA for every 10 patients. Patient types and common diagnoses include chest pain, syncope, and angina. The skills required for this role include stroke experience, cardiac rhythm interpretation, tracheostomy care, PIV starts, and chest tube management. Other responsibilities include managing drains and tubes, such as Dobhoff, PEG tubes, Hemovac, JP drains, flexiseals, and foley insertion and management. Medication management includes cardiac drips, heparin, blood products, and intravenous fluids. Support within the department consists of supervisors and charge RNs, who may have patient assignments. A resource RN will assist with admissions and discharges. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 but is not dedicated to this unit. A combined effort between RNs and an IV team will handle phlebotomy. The electronic medical record system used is EPIC. IV pumps and medication dispensing systems utilized include Alaris and Omnicell. Floating may be required within the region and scope of practice based on needs. Travelers will be compensated for time spent traveling between facilities if necessary mid-shift. Travelers are expected to work every other weekend and 75% of holidays. Requests for time off can be approved for up to 6 days, excluding holidays. Schedule cycles are organized every 6 weeks, with set shift times. The facility promotes a great team environment, including unit-based activities like a book club and Netflix watching clubs.
