Position Summary / Scope of Responsibility: The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics LLC (CAO) is one of the nation's largest Orthopaedics practices, owned and operated by physicians, with over 60 locations across Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The Director of Surgical Services provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for all surgical support functions within the ambulatory surgery center (ASC). This role oversees the Materials Management department, Sterile Processing department, and Surgical Scrub Technicians, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost effective perioperative operations. The Director collaborates closely with clinical leadership, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and administrative teams to maintain high-quality patient care and regulatory compliance. This position will support operations at Watkins Mill Surgery Center, ensuring efficient daily workflows and high-quality patient care delivery. Watkins Mill Surgery Center is a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery center located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, serving the DMV region and specializing in orthopedic surgery and pain management. Primary Responsibilities: The incumbent may be asked to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically stated in this description. The duties and responsibilities of the position are to be carried out in a manner that is consistent with the Mission, Core Values and Operating Principles of MedVanta. 1. Provide day to day leadership and long term direction for materials management, sterile processing, and surgical scrub technician teams. 2. Develop and implement operational policies, workflows, and performance standards that support safe and efficient surgical care. 3. Ensure adequate staffing, scheduling, and competency development across all supervised departments. 4. Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. 5. Ensure all sterile processing activities meet or exceed regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., AAMI, AORN, CMS, state regulations). 6. Oversee adherence to infection prevention practices and collaborate with infection control personnel to address quality or safety concerns. 7. Maintain readiness for accreditation surveys and internal audits. 8. Direct the materials management team in procurement, inventory control, vendor relations, and cost containment strategies. 9. Optimize supply chain processes to ensure availability of surgical supplies, implants, and equipment while minimizing waste and overstock. 10. Evaluate and approve new products, equipment, and technology in collaboration with surgeons and clinical leadership. 11. Oversee surgical scrub technicians to ensure proper case preparation, instrumentation setup, and intraoperative support. 12. Monitor OR turnover efficiency, case flow, and equipment utilization to improve throughput and patient experience. 13. Partner with clinical leaders to troubleshoot workflow issues and implement process improvements. 14. Develop and manage departmental budgets, including labor, supplies, and capital expenditures. 15. Develop vendor supply and implant management system, including financial and purchasing plans. 16. Analyze operational data to identify trends, opportunities, and risks. 17. Participate in strategic planning for service line expansion, equipment upgrades, and operational growth. 18. Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate staff across all supervised departments. 19. Promote professional development, cross training, and competency advancement. 20. Address performance issues promptly and constructively. 21. Checks and verifies list of instruments and surgical supplies before each procedure. 22. Prepares patients for surgery, including washing and disinfecting incision sites, and applying sterile drapes on the patient. 23. Anticipates Surgeon and patient needs during a procedure. 24. Passes instruments and other surgical supplies to the Surgeon and other health professionals during operations. 25. Utilizes correct body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, and/or tables in order to prevent injury to patient and personnel. 26. Ensures patients receive excellent care before, during, and after surgery. 27. Improves efficiency of Surgeons and other professionals in the operating rooms. 28. Stocks adequate supplies for surgeries based on the Surgeon's preferences. 29. Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and acts according to policy. 30. Documents patient-care records and other forms according to facility policies and procedures 31. Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about the patient's status 32. Participate in orientation and education of all operating room staff on an ongoing basis. 33. Other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience: 1. National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or the Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification OR Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN), required 2. Current Basic Life Support certificate required. 3. Minimum 5 years of perioperative or surgical services leadership experience, preferably in an ambulatory surgery environment. 4. Strong knowledge of sterile processing standards, surgical instrumentation, and supply chain operations. 5. Proficient in Microsoft Office and inventory management software. 6. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of products required. 7. Proficient knowledge of medical terminology. Competencies / Required Skills and Abilities: 1. Some heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a standard work shift, to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. 2. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting. 3. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, medical equipment, fax machine, scanner, photocopier, and telephone. 4. Adequate hearing to perform duties in person and over telephone. 5. Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone. 6. Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of supplies, as well as reading materials from printed sources and computer screens. 7. Requires potential exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
