Examples of Duties Detention Officer - Key Responsibilities As a Detention Officer, you play a vital role in ensuring the safety, security, and orderly conduct of detainees and inmates within the facility. Your duties include: Intake, Release, and Visitation Manage the intake and release of individuals in the Booking and Release Unit, maintaining strict accountability and compliance with facility policies. Facilitate inmate visitation, including virtual family meetings or in-person visits with attorneys and court officials, escorting inmates safely to designated areas. Security and Supervision Conduct routine security checks to ensure the safety of both inmates and staff. Maintain a highly visible presence throughout the facility to deter misconduct. Direct inmate behavior, preventing and de-escalating potential altercations to maintain a controlled environment. Daily Operations Deliver critical items such as mail, medication, meals, linens, hygiene products, and other supplies while following strict security protocols. Attend to inmates with medical or mental health conditions, ensuring proper care and well-being. Supervise daily inmate activities, including cleaning of cells, kitchens, and laundry areas. Prepare inmates for court appearances and escort them to court, medical facilities, mental health appointments, or other necessary destinations. Monitoring and Safety Monitor detention center video feeds and surveillance equipment to maintain a secure environment. Conduct contraband searches of inmates, vehicles, cells, and facility areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Inspect and maintain all assigned equipment to guarantee operational readiness. Communication and Coordination Coordinate effectively with fellow officers and staff using radios and other communication tools to maintain order. Assist with canteen operations, distributing supplies as needed. Maintain detailed records of inmate activities and operational tasks to ensure transparency and accountability. Additional Duties Perform other related duties as assigned to maintain the safety, security, and proper functioning of the detention center.
