Job Description

Maintenance Technician II (Plumbing) This position performs journey-level plumbing work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air, gas, water and waste disposal systems in campus-wide buildings and facilities; assists skilled technicians in performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance, repair, alteration and construction of college buildings, facilities, and fixtures including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and painting; and performs related work as required. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. Essential job functions include assembling pipe sections, tubing, or fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing, or welding equipment; installing, repairing and replacing pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances such as dishwashers, water heaters, or fixtures such as sinks, toilets, faucets and pipes using hand or power tools; clearing obstructions from lines; filling pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observing pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks; directing helpers engaged in pipe cutting, preassembly, or installation of plumbing systems or components; keeping records of work assignments; participating in remodeling of campus buildings and facilities including submitting cost estimates to supervisor; inspecting campus buildings and facilities to identify maintenance needs and safety issues; participating in performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of college buildings, facilities, and fixtures including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and painting; cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment; loading and unloading equipment and supplies; troubleshooting and diagnosing routine equipment and system problems; scheduling and performing routine repair work or parts replacement; monitoring and maintaining accurate records on preventive maintenance/repair work completed; responding as needed to emergency situations requiring maintenance and repair work; and performing other related duties as assigned. Minimum requirements to perform work include a high school diploma or GED, four (4) years of experience in performing journey-level plumbing work, and certification in plumbing preferred. Knowledge, skills and abilities include knowledge of techniques, methods and tools of the plumbing trade; skill in the performance of duties related to the plumbing trade; skill in the use and care of the tools associated with the plumbing trade; knowledge of safety practices relevant to the tasks performed and equipment employed; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to perform heavy manual labor; ability to perform arithmetic; ability to communicate effectively; knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment; and ability to organize, plan and prioritize work. Physical demands include the ability to lift 50 to 75 pounds independently and be able to perform strenuous physical labor, and the ability to exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently. May be required to use a ladder or scaffolding. Also requires frequent bending, squatting, standing, reaching, climbing, kneeling, stooping, crawling, and occasional sitting. May be required to occasionally work in small, hard to reach spaces. Work is performed both inside a facility and outdoors in all weather conditions. Some hazardous situations may exist based on work to be performed. Working conditions may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals.
