Customs Classification Specialist The Customs Classification Specialist evaluates product design, materials, and mechanical function to determine and approve U.S. tariff classifications performed by the Global Classification Hub. The role bridges engineering and regulatory law converting technical product characteristics into defensible HTSUS classifications and ensures centralized execution aligns with U.S. compliance obligations. The position owns U.S. classification technical interpretation guidance, risk decisions, and approval authority affecting duty exposure and compliance posture. Key Responsibilities Engineering-Based Classification Authority Interpret mechanical drawings, assemblies, schematics, and BOMs to identify product function and essential character Translate engineering design into HTSUS classification logic using GRIs, legal notes, and Explanatory Notes Approve or reject classifications performed by the Global Classification Hub Determine classification drivers (function, principal use, material composition, degree of completion, integration into larger systems) Establish technical classification decision trees for recurring components and assemblies Oversight of Global Classification Hub (India) Provide technical direction and coaching to classification analysts Perform audits of classification outputs Act as an escalation point for complex assemblies and multifunction equipment Regulatory & Compliance Defense Ensure classifications meet CBP reasonable care standards Support CF-28 and CF-29 responses Support Post-Summary Corrections, Reconciliation, and disclosures related to classification Maintain audit-defensible engineering rationale Process, Data & Automation Develop standardized classification logic enabling automation Structure technical attributes to support system-based classification Improve classification consistency across regions and product families Support digital classification libraries within MIC global classification application Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with engineering, product development, sourcing, and suppliers to obtain technical details Support trade programs dependent on classification accuracy Provide classification guidance during product development and design changes Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline Experience 5+ years working with mechanical products, components, or machinery (agricultural equipment, construction equipment, automotive, or industrial machinery preferred) Experience interpreting engineering drawings and assemblies required Exposure to regulated technical standards, product compliance, or trade compliance preferred Demonstrated interest and aptitude for learning regulatory frameworks and applying them to technical decision-making (training in customs tariff classification will be provided) Technical Competencies Ability to determine product function from drawings and specifications Strong understanding of mechanical systems (power transmission, hydraulics, HVAC, structures, electro-mechanical assemblies) Analytical reasoning and technical documentation capability Ability to defend technical conclusions in writing Willingness to learn and apply tariff classification rules (GRIs, legal notes, and interpretive guidance) to mechanical products Digital & Analytical Skills Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, Power Query, data cleansing, lookup logic, structured analysis) Experience building or maintaining dashboards in Power BI (data modeling, visualization, and performance tracking) Ability to analyze large datasets to identify classification risk patterns and systemic errors Experience working in structured systems (PLM, ERP, or compliance platforms SAP/MIC preferred) Ability to structure technical attributes for decision workflows and automation logic Experience with data governance, standardization, or master data quality controls preferred Competencies Detail-oriented technical reviewer mindset Comfortable making decisions with legal and financial impact Able to coach technical and non-technical stakeholders Strong written and verbal communication skills Pay Transparency The annual salary for this role is $72,750 - $97,000 plus any applicable bonus (Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as skill, experience and qualification for the role.)
