Salary: $20.65 - $28.51 Hourly Location : City of St. Cloud, FL Job Type: FULL-TIME Department: PUBLIC WORKS Division: REFUSE COLLECTION Opening Date: 03/03/2026 Closing Date: 3/10/2026 5:00 PM Eastern FLSA: Non-Exempt Description Now Hiring: Driver/Collector - Public Works Department The City is seeking dependable and motivated individuals to join our Public Works team as Driver/Collectors. In this essential role, you will operate collection vehicles and heavy equipment to safely and efficiently collect waste materials along assigned routes-helping keep our community clean and running smoothly. As a Driver/Collector, you will: Demonstrate Accountability by adhering to established schedules, following City policies and safety procedures, and communicating proactively with Supervisors if routes cannot be completed during standard hours. Take Ownership of your assigned routes, equipment, and service delivery, ensuring tasks are completed thoroughly and responsibly each day. Embrace Empowerment by working independently while coordinating effectively with Supervisors and team members to maintain reliable operations. Support Innovation by operating a variety of collection vehicles and heavy equipment efficiently and adapting to operational needs to enhance service delivery. Position Classifications Driver/Collector - Sanitation Operate collection vehicles (Front Loader, Side Loader, Clam Truck) to complete assigned routes. Front Loader: 3:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Side Loader: 6:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Clam Truck: 6:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Driver/Collector - Heavy Equipment Operate heavy equipment such as front loaders and tractor-trailers. Prior heavy-duty equipment experience preferred. Heavy Equipment: 4:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Hours may vary based on business needs (as early as 4:00 a.m. to no later than 6:00 p.m.) Please note: Both classifications are interchangeable based on operational needs. Flexibility ensures efficient and reliable service delivery to our community. Duties and Responsibilities The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. Driver/Collector - Sanitation: (REQUIRES A CLASS B CDL with an acceptable driving history) Collect waste materials using a semi-automated collection vehicle from assigned locations (ASL, Front Loader, Roll-Off). Operate the clam truck to pick up large or heavy items, including appliances. Determine which items comply with collection policies and procedures; leave notices for non-compliance. Plan and execute daily routes for clam truck collections, including separation of materials as required. Respond to citizen inquiries about collection services, referring complex issues to the Supervisor. Driver/Collector - Heavy Equipment: (REQUIRES A CLASS A CDL with an acceptable driving history) Collect and transport containers from construction sites or other locations to landfills or transfer stations. Tractor/Trailer driver. Operate front loaders Operate the clam truck to pick up large or heavy items, including appliances. Operate additional equipment such as bulldozers, skid loaders, excavators and all other heavy equipment as assigned. Conduct daily vehicle inspections, perform basic maintenance or repairs, and report significant issues to the Supervisor and Vehicle Maintenance team. Clean collection vehicles per departmental policies before or after routes. Prepare written and oral reports as required by the Supervisor. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred, with six (6) months of experience operating vehicles in each category (Sanitation and Heavy Equipment) or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid state Class A CDL license with an acceptable driving history for the Driver/Collector Heavy Equipment. Must possess and maintain a valid State Class B CDL license with an acceptable driving history for the Sanitation Driver/Collector. Prior experience operating heavy equipment is preferred for Driver/Collector - Heavy Equipment. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand; move; reach with hands and arms and communicate. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Mathematics: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Language Ability: Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences. Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
