Salary: $23.55 Hourly Location : City of Long Beach, CA Job Type: Unclassified - Part-Time, Seasonal Job Number: PR25-008 (02-SL) Department: Parks, Recreation & Marine - (UC) Opening Date: 03/03/2026 DESCRIPTION Bulletin will remain open until vacancies are filled. Bulletin may close at any time after March 20, 2026, without further notice. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part time staff and a budget of $85 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas. The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities. Below are some of the aquatics programs offered: BELMONT POOL Belmont Plaza Pool is a year-round, outdoor facility. The pool is 50m x 25m in size with water temperature maintained between 80 - 82 degrees. The pool offers a variety of lap swim, recreation swim, water exercise classes and swim lessons to the public throughout a seven days a week during normal business hours. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. PARK COMMUNITY POOL King Park Pool is a year-round, indoor facility. The site consists of a 25-yard pool and a secondary wading pool with water temperature maintained between 83-86 degrees. The pool offers a variety of lap swim, recreation swim, water exercise classes and swim lessons to the public throughout a five day per week public operating schedule. SILVERADO PARK COMMUNITY POOL The Silverado Pool is a year-round, indoor facility. The pool is a L-shaped 25-meter pool with a shallow water wading area. Water temperature is maintained between 83-84 degrees The pool offers a variety of lap swim, recreation swim, water exercise classes and swim lessons to the public throughout a five day per week public operating schedule. Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, Non-Career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions. EXAMPLES OF DUTIESAssist the Aquatics Supervisor with ongoing staff training and annual in-service training; Supports the Aquatics Supervisor in overseeing daily operations during a shift; Assist in planning and implementing various program activities; Instruct a variety of swimming classes, water aerobics, and complete swim lesson evaluations; Serves as a lifeguard or instructor guard, as required; Monitor and maintain accurate registration and attendance records; Collect pool fees and prepare daily activity summary reports and bank deposit forms; Maintain equipment and supplies; Assists with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work on or around the swimming pool; Act as lead staff in emergency and rescue situations; Perform other related duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS TO FILEMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must meet at least one of the options below: (Option A) - Two (2) years (or equivalent 500 hours total) of part-time experience (paid or unpaid) working in aquatics or a related field; OR, (Option B) - Forty-eight (48) units of college education, including a minimum of eight (8) units in aquatics or a related field; OR, (Option C) - A combination of education and experience as outlined above. Must possess or obtain the following three (3) certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor - must be obtained within 6 months of hiring; Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers - must be obtained prior to the first day of employment; Water Safety Instructor - must be obtained prior to the first day of employment; Must be able to pass a swim test (200 yard swim in freestyle/breaststroke, 75 yard stroke demonstration, brick retrieval, and treading water); Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in aquatics, recreation, and/or other related areas is highly desirable. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word; Experience in the use of the ActiveNet or other registration program Successful candidates will possess the following: Be willing to work a flexible schedule and assist various programs at various pool locations; Be able to relate well to children, parents and staff (school and agency); Be able and willing to adapt to a changing environment. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment; Experience working with children and youth with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
