Job Purpose This position is responsible for carrying out community patrol and general police services in support of the Department's mission to protect life and property, maintain public order, and enhance the quality of life in Zionsville. Duties and Responsibilities Working under the direction of a Patrol Sergeant, a Police Officer performs a wide range of law enforcement functions, including but not limited to: Patrolling assigned areas to deter, detect, and investigate criminal activity. Responding promptly to calls for service and community concerns. Monitoring traffic flow and enforcing Town and State traffic laws. Conducting field investigations and apprehending criminal suspects. Preparing and submitting accurate reports, including probable cause affidavits, search warrants, and subpoenas when appropriate. Planning and executing arrest strategies; apprehending and arresting suspects; advising individuals of constitutional rights; conducting searches; handcuffing, fingerprinting, photographing, booking, and transporting prisoners. Completing detailed arrest reports, incident narratives, and witness statements. Maintaining awareness of current policing techniques, technology, and legal updates. Ensuring the proper maintenance and inspection of assigned vehicles, weapons, and equipment. Performing other related duties as assigned by supervisors. Officers in this position are expected to utilize approved law enforcement methods, equipment, and techniques with a high degree of professionalism and independence consistent with their level of experience. Qualifications Applicants must possess: Minimum education qualification of a high school education or equivalent. The position requires certification by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board. Strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess complex situations and take appropriate action. Eligible for enrollment in the PERF 1977 Fund: shall be at least 21 years of age and under the age of 40 at the date of hire. Working Conditions Community policing in Zionsville requires the ability to balance friendly, service-oriented public interaction with readiness to respond effectively to dangerous or stressful situations. Officers must be available to work all hours-days, nights, weekends, and holidays-based on departmental needs. Supervised by Reports directly to a Patrol Sergeant.
