Collections Specialist (Burlington/Greensboro, NC) $ 22 - $ 24 / Hour Burlington, North Carolina Accounting & Finance Contract to hire The Collections Specialist is responsible for managing the day-to-day collections activities for an assigned portfolio of customer accounts. This role focuses on driving timely payment, reducing accounts receivable aging, resolving billing and payment discrepancies, and partnering cross-functionally to mitigate financial risk while maintaining positive customer relationships. Responsibilities and Expectations Lead the day-to-day collections processes for all customer accounts within an assigned portfolio. Meet or exceed established collections targets, including accounts receivable aging metrics and collection activity volume. Review accounts daily to identify delinquency trends, payment risks, and troubled accounts; communicate concerns and escalate potential risks to management as appropriate. Lead and participate in periodic accounts receivable (AR) review meetings with Service Centers to discuss account status, risks, and action plans. Perform account reconciliations, including reviewing, researching, and resolving customer billing discrepancies. Submit billing issues and adjustment requests to the Billing department for correction and follow through to resolution. Identify and report misapplied payments to the Cash Application department. Research unapplied and on-account payments and assist the Cash Application department with account reconciliations as needed. Identify and report duplicate payments and overpayments in a timely manner; coordinate with the Cash Application department to ensure customers are notified and refunds are processed promptly. Work closely with the Legal department to support the timely filing of lien and bond claims when applicable. Maintain accurate documentation of collection activities, communications, and account actions in accordance with company policies. Qualifications and Competencies High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree preferred. Two (2) or more years of experience in collections, accounts receivable, or a related financial role. Strong attention to detail with the ability to analyze account data and identify discrepancies. Effective communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with internal teams and external customers. Ability to manage multiple accounts and priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to escalate issues appropriately. Proficiency with accounting systems, ERP platforms, and Microsoft Office tools (especially Excel) is preferred.
