Salary: $17.00 Hourly Location : VFW & Legion Pools - De Pere, WI Job Type: Seasonal Job Number: 2025-00140 Department: Seasonal - CC-DPW-PRF Division: Seasonal - CC Opening Date: 12/19/2025 Closing Date: Continuous Supervises: None Reports to: Recreation Supervisor General Description The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor position is responsible for maintaining a safe aquatic environment for the patrons at the facility. Safety, responsibility and prevention of accidents is the number one responsibility of the lifeguards. Additional duties include: swim lesson instruction, fitness class instruction, special event assistance, and cleaning. This position works under the general supervision of the Pool Manager and Recreation Supervisor, or other supervisor, as assigned. Work Schedule: Typical schedule varies daily and according to location. Pools open June 6, 2026, and close for the season on August 16, 2026. Additional hours will be scheduled for pre-season training and pool set up. Substitute employees should be available to work 10-15 hours per week on average in addition to 1 hour of in-service training each week. Schedule includes days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work Location: Legion Pool (1212 Charles Street) & VFW Aquatic Facility (730 Grant Street) For positions that require certification, the City of De Pere will reimburse employees the cost of certification or recertification up to the average cost of certification or recertification for the area. Applications will be reviewed on a continuous basis.Essential FunctionsOversees the safe and proper operation of assigned pool facility; ensures that all facility rules and safety guidelines are followed; reports breaches of rules, as necessary Expels swimmers, if necessary, for willful disobedience of pool rules Responds to all emergency situations while on duty; administers first aid and makes rescues, as necessary Aware of, abides to, and enforces the Swimming Pool Personnel Policies Assists with pre-season and post-season preparations and clean-up Handles patron complaints and concerns effectively and with consideration, using good public relations skills Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of: Lifeguarding, first aid, CPR techniques and use of an AED Instruction of swim skills (preferred) Prevention of accidents related to and around a pool Ability to: Work in a team-based environment Maintain a safe aquatic environment, identify and prevent accidents or other unsafe situations Perform lifeguarding, first aid, artificial respiration and CPR techniques and use of an AED Exercise tact, maintain pose and professionalism and use good judgment in resolving disputes and differences arising with the public and employees Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public, employees, and community leaders Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing Handle emergency situations effectively and efficiently Work outdoors in summer weather conditions Work as necessary, days, nights, weekends and holidays during the pool operating season, pre-season start up and post-season clean up Enforce safety and health regulations Understand and follow written and oral instructions and procedures Minimum Requirements & Physical Requirements Minimum Requirements Valid and current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate Valid and current American Red Cross Water Park Endorsement preferred Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred At least 15 years of age Physical Requirements Able to swim 300 yards continuously (freestyle or breast stroke) Able to tread water for 2 minutes with legs only Able to complete a timed brick retrieval Able to rescue a victim in 12 feet of water There are no benefits associated with this position.
