The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) at PNNL excels in experimental, computational, and theoretical chemistry and materials science. We harness advanced computing and data science to tackle some of the biggest scientific hurdles faced today. Our team of experts collaborates across various disciplines to drive innovations that matter. The Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data Division (ACMDD) propels research in areas such as artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, and computing technologies. Our mission centers on the co-design of next-generation algorithms and energy-efficient systems that optimize complex behaviors in science and energy applications. Responsibilities The Future Computing Technology Group at PNNL is looking for a dedicated PhD intern. We seek candidates with expertise in one (or more) of the following areas: Quantum error correction, detection, and mitigation Implementation of quantum algorithms and protocols on near-term hardware Development of benchmarking, verification, and validation toolkits for quantum computing Resource estimation for Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) and Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing (FTQC) Optimization and transpilation of quantum algorithms for NISQ and FTQC ZX Calculus principles Intersection of quantum computing and high-performance computing This internship lasts three months but has potential for extension based on performance and project requirements. As an intern, you will engage in innovative research and contribute to impactful projects alongside a team of leading scientists. Collaboration is key, including close work with teams based in other locations. Additional responsibilities include: Conducting research on the latest advancements in selected topics, in collaboration with staff scientists. Focusing on a subset of the listed areas while integrating insights from 1-3 mentioned topics. Presenting research updates and findings during weekly team meetings. Collaborating with fellow interns, post-docs, and staff scientists to enhance the quantum capabilities of our ecosystem. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited institution. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Preferred Qualifications: Currently enrolled in a PhD program related to Quantum Computing, Physics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Computational Science, or a closely related field.
