What Radiation Safety contributes to Cardinal Health As a key member of our team, the Radiation Safety Specialist provides essential support and consulting for nuclear pharmacies, manufacturing facilities, and both medical and non-medical organizations in the safe use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines. This role involves developing, deploying, implementing, and training on health physics and radiation safety policies, procedures, and programs to ensure compliant operations for both the company and our customers. The majority of your work will be in the Southern California area (including Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties). We prefer candidates who reside in or near this area or those willing to frequently travel to it. Key Responsibilities Conduct routine customer visits across various states, including California, Arizona, and Nevada; overnight stays are routine and daily visits to local customer sites are common. Evaluate and calibrate radiation measuring equipment used with radioactive materials. Assess radiological equipment for compliance with state and national standards. Review radiological imaging procedures to provide advice on patient dose reduction. Assist facilities in developing or updating policies and procedures related to radioactive materials and imaging procedures. Help facilities maintain compliance with the American College of Radiology and Joint Commissions for Nuclear Medicine and PET camera testing. Offer consulting services to healthcare facilities on compliance with radioactive materials licenses and federal or state regulations. Prepare radioactive materials license applications, renewals, and amendment requests. Facilitate interactions between facilities and regulatory agencies regarding radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines. Complete radiation safety audits and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) reviews as needed. Respond to customer and regulatory agency inquiries on radiation safety and health physics promptly. Conduct reviews related to nuclear medicine, HDR (high dose rate), and industrial radiation safety. Perform dosimetry reviews, including worker and patient dose estimates. Conduct dose investigations and assist facilities in meeting regulatory compliance. Lead training sessions and document all training activities; maintain current reference library for radiation protection. Provide customer survey meter calibration and other essential radiation safety services as per customer RAM (Radioactive Materials) License requirements. Engage with potential new customers and expand the customer base; manage new contracts in coordination with Legal. Fulfill additional job-related duties as needed and collaborate effectively with team members to achieve objectives. Develop skills necessary to be designated as RSO (Radiation Safety Officer) on customer licenses – 10 CFR 35.100, 35.200, 35.300, 35.400, 35.600, and 35.100. Monitor internal trends and propose process improvements based on observations. Ensure accurate billing for services and manage financial aspects of the region. Utilize best practices and extensive technical knowledge to guide customers. Qualifications 8-12 years of experience is preferred. Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience is preferred. Willingness to travel up to 80% of the time; comfortable with overnight stays and daily site visits. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Proficiency in basic health physics concepts, including survey instrument use, survey techniques, leak testing, and dosage estimation. Familiarity with Agreement State and NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) regulations. Exceptional professional writing skills. Well-versed in Microsoft Office applications.
