Job Details Position: Travel ICU Registered Nurse (RN) – Night Shift (ICU RN, Critical Care Nurse) Location: Portsmouth, VA 23707 (Hampton Roads; Portsmouth nursing jobs; Virginia travel nurse) Contract Length: 13 weeks (March 23, 2026 – June 20, 2026) Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Week: 36 Estimated Weekly Pay: $1910 – $2010 (competitive travel nursing pay) Unit: 17-bed ICU (high acuity) Floating: May float to like or lower acuity units and between facilities as needed Weekend/Holiday: Every other weekend and holidays as needed Support Staff: Patient Care Technician (PCT) on some shifts, charge nurse support Openings: 1 Job Requirements Minimum 2 years of recent ICU experience required; travel nursing experience preferred (ICU travel nurse, critical care) Active RN license in Virginia or compact/multistate RN license BLS and ACLS certifications required NIH Stroke Certification preferred (can obtain prior to start) Must pass a dysrhythmia exam during orientation BSN preferred (preferred for many hospital critical care roles) EPIC EHR experience preferred (electronic health record experience) Additional preferred certifications: TNCC, CCRN, PCCN, RN-BC, TCRN No local candidates (must live more than 50 miles from facility) — aligns with travel nurse eligibility Responsibilities (ICU RN / Critical Care Nurse) Perform comprehensive initial and ongoing assessments; develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care for critically ill patients Deliver evidence-based critical care nursing for complex medical and surgical ICU patients (sepsis, renal failure, respiratory failure, heart failure, multi-system organ failure) Safely administer medications and titrate continuous infusions (vasopressors, sedatives, paralytics) per protocol Manage advanced life support equipment and therapies: mechanical ventilators, BiPAP, high-flow oxygen, CRRT, and minimally invasive cardiac output monitoring Provide hemodynamic monitoring and care for patients with invasive lines and drains (central lines, arterial lines, chest tubes, JP drains, pericardial drains) Coordinate interdisciplinary care and act as the primary clinical contact for patients and families, emphasizing clear communication and patient-centered critical care Maintain accurate documentation in the EHR and support unit quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical outcomes initiatives Adapt to unit needs and float to appropriate units or facilities when required as a flexible travel RN Pursue ongoing professional development and maintain current critical care competencies and certifications Why You'll Love Portsmouth, VA Enjoy a lively waterfront community with historic neighborhoods, local shops, and easy access to Norfolk and Virginia Beach Explore scenic parks, museums, and a thriving arts and culture scene in Hampton Roads Experience the best of coastal Virginia living while advancing your ICU nursing career with rewarding travel nursing assignments Apply now to take your ICU nursing skills to the next level as a Travel ICU RN in Portsmouth, VA!
