Why Join Our Team The State's Attorney's Office is actively seeking dynamic individuals for the role of Senior Deputy Prosecutor. As a vital part of the criminal justice system, our team collaborates closely with law enforcement, probation, parole, juvenile justice centers, and various community organizations. Closing Date: Continuous How You Will Make an Impact Manage a caseload primarily involving misdemeanor offenses, low-level felonies, juvenile violations, and juvenile abuse cases. Prepare and present cases in legal proceedings, including drafting legal documents and conducting legal research. Evaluate police reports, evidence, and offenses to make informed decisions on charges. Prepare and track subpoenas for witnesses and records. Interview witnesses and assist in jury selection. Stay updated on changes in laws, statutes, and policies regarding criminal law and juvenile justice. Draft proposed legislation and attend legislative committee meetings. Engage with victims, parents, school personnel, court officials, and law enforcement to coordinate case procedures. Address inquiries from the public and media. Make recommendations for custody, parental rights, sentencing, and restitution. Represent the office at public and private events. Engage with the media and prepare press releases. Participate in boards, panels, and task forces. Educate and train volunteers, law enforcement, and social workers on legal issues and court processes. Supervise interns and clerical staff. Manage phone inquiries and in-person visits from clients and the general public regarding legal concerns. What You Need to Succeed in This Role A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in South Dakota. Recent law graduates are encouraged to apply, with the ability to sit for the next South Dakota bar exam a plus. A combination of education and experience may also be considered. Successful completion of a background check is required. Proficiency in civil and criminal law, court procedures, and legal research techniques is essential. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, along with independence in decision-making within legal guidelines are necessary. Competency in technology use and the ability to foster collaborative relationships with colleagues and the public are crucial. A professional demeanor and respectful communication with others are expected.
