At the Nuclear Sciences Division, we aim to bolster both national and global security, foster energy independence, and discover advanced methods for nuclear waste remediation through cutting-edge research techniques and technologies. Responsibilities We are excited to invite passionate PhD students who are seeking hands-on experience and are eager to make a difference in sustainable energy solutions to apply for our immersive 10-week paid summer internship within the Nuclear Sciences Division. Collaborate with leading scientists and engineers, starting from either May 26, 2026, or June 16, 2026, as part of the Summer 2026 cohort. If you have a background or interest in chemistry, materials science, nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or computer science, anticipate engaging in meaningful research projects that challenge the frontiers of energy and environmental sciences. Research Focus Areas Experimental and Computational Engineering: Engage in research related to multiphase fluid dynamics, heat transport, structural safety evaluations, nuclear radiation modeling, and nuclear material storage solutions. Irradiation Sciences: Analyze irradiated materials and study radiation effects. Nuclear Chemistry and Engineering: Delve into radiochemical process engineering and explore advanced separation technologies. Radiological Materials: Innovate waste-form solutions, encompassing vitrification and immobilization techniques. Reactor Materials and Mechanical Design: Examine stress corrosion cracking and advanced materials characterization, along with the design of electro-mechanical systems. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Currently enrolled in a PhD program at an accredited institution. Minimum GPA of 3.0 required. Preferred Qualifications: Interest in fields such as additive manufacturing, chemical engineering, chemistry, computational modeling, material science, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, software engineering, and systems engineering.
