Job Description & Requirements Specialty: Surgical Technologist Discipline: Allied Health Professional Start Date: 03/16/2026 Duration: 12 weeks 36 hours per week Shift: 12 hours Employment Type: Travel Primary Purpose The Surgical Technologist (ST) is a member of the perioperative nursing resource team, working under the general supervision of an RN. He/she functions in the scrub person role, performing direct and indirect care of surgical patients through the lifecycle. Major Responsibilities Scrub Role/Position Duties Provides scrub service for minor surgical and endoscopic surgical procedures. Provides scrub services for complex surgical procedures in at least two surgical specialties. Selects supplies and equipment for surgical procedures. Assists in team preparation of the OR for surgical procedures and room set up, equipment set up, checking supplies and equipment, opening sterile items. Assists with patient positioning and moving if not scrubbed. Assists with room cleaning including return of unused supplies and equipment to proper storage. Performs stocking duties. Performs decontamination duties: Sorting and cleaning instruments Operation of washer and ultrasonic cleaner Assembling, wrapping and labeling instruments Operates sterilizers according to policy/procedure. Reports defective/malfunctioning equipment according to policy/procedure. Handles specimens according to policy/procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of: Instruments General supplies Wound closure materials Automatic stapling devices Dressings and drains Completes assigned duties in effective, safe, efficient and timely manner. Participates in performance improvement activities in Surgical Services. Functions as a resource person for staff and assists with new staff training. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices as related to: Performance of surgical hand scrub Gowning and closed gloving Preparing and maintaining sterile field, including recognition of breaks in sterile technique and appropriate measures Performing counts Safe use of ESU Safe use, care and cleaning of instruments Safe use, care and cleaning power instruments and equipment Safe use, care and cleaning of endoscopic instruments and equipment Draping Following infection control guidelines and demonstrating standard precautions Minimum Job Requirements Education Graduate of accredited Surgical Technologist program, or minimum one year work experience in at a multi-service line facility Certification / License Surgical Technologist Certification Work Experience Minimum one year work experience in at a multi-service line facility or graduate of accredited Surgical Technologist program. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities • Knowledge of operating room safety and sterilization techniques • Ability to care for patients and make them comfortable • Ability to perform CPR and other basic life support procedures • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. • Highly organized, skilled at prioritizing work demands. • Demonstrates flexibility and supports changes that improve quality of care, service and operations. • Maintains consistent attendance and reports to work on-time. • Maintains a positive and cooperative outlook toward his/her position, the office, and fellow employees. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions ENVIRONMENTAL AND JOB HAZARDS Frequent exposure to communicable disease, bodily fluids and tissue, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries weight up to 50 pounds. Ability to distinguish letters, numbers and symbols with vision and hearing within normal range to respond to Code alerts and equipment alarms. Work-related stress due to volume and time constraints with irregular working hours. No Chest Pain Center Stroke Center Radius rule: Traveler's permanent address must be 50 miles outside of home unit ● Unit Information: OR Rooms: 13 ORs plus (1) Procedure/Cysto room Performs on average 45 cases per day Minimum Years of Experience required? 2 years of OR exp in specialty (RN, CST, CVOR RN, CVOR CST) Will you accept a first-time traveler? Yes ● Patient Types/Common Diagnoses: Main OR: Orthopedic, Spine, General, Colon, Breast, Podiatry, Urology, Robotic, GYN, Plastics CVOR: Cardiothoracic, Vascular, Thoracic ● Required License, National Certification, Certs (BLS, ACLS, etc.), or other position specific requirements: Surg Tech: BLS, MUST have completed an accredited Surgical Tech Program prior to start National certification (preferred) Surg Tech (CVOR Main): Experience to scrub in Orthopedic, Cardiothoracic, Vascular, General, Urology, Robotic, GYN, Colon, Breast, Spine, Podiatry, Plastic CVOR Tech - must have strong and recent experience with CABG, TAVR, Vascular and Thoracic cases ● Support within the Department: OR Assistant – (6) to support department during the weekdays Receptionist/HUC Charge nurse Anesthesia/CRNA, 24/7 ● Technology/Equipment: EMR: EPIC IV Pump: Alaris Med dispensing: Omnicell Monitors: Phillips ● Floating: None specified ● Orientation (facility and unit): Main OR: 1 week CVOR: 2 weeks Orientation will be five 8-hour shifts.
